  • Walking on the Wild Side

    Open Access•John Phillips, John C Phillips•CHAPTER•Transgender on Screen•2006

Numerous studies have been published to date, many by gay and feminist scholars, on the nature and effects of pornographic representations. Very little attention, however, has been focused by scholars on the Internet, perhaps because it is still a relatively new medium, but above all, I think, because the Internet remains an unordered and chaotic space, Internet material defying definition, challenging conventional categories of authorship, genre…

  • Racial Discrimination in Sports

    John C Phillips•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Sociological research has demonstrated a long history of racial discrimination in major league baseball and in other sports. Two patterns of discrimination have been identified: (1) exclusion of black players from central, leadership positions and (2) exclusion of black players of marginal ability from the opportunity to play. This paper focuses on the second “type” of discrimination. Recent data indicate that discrimination against blacks of mar…

  • The Integration of Central Positions in Baseball

    John C Phillips•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•1991•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Earlier work (Phillips, 1983) showed limited or no progress in the accessibility of central positions (catcher, shortstop, second base) to black professional baseball aspirants. A closer examination of the data reveals an interesting change during the past two decades. Blacks came to appear in numbers at second base in the mid-1970s and at shortstop during the 1976-1986 decade, but this progress was obscured when the three central positions were …

  • With the Boys

    Open Access•John C Phillips•REVIEW•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•1988

What are boys like? Who is the creature inhabiting the twilight zone between the perils of the Oedipus complex and the Strum und Drang of puberty? In With the Boys, Gary Alan Fine examines the American male preadolescent by studying the world of Little League baseball. Drawings on three years of firsthand observation of five Little Leagues, Fine describes how, through organized sport and its accompanying activities, boys learn to play, work, and …

  • Race and Career Opportunities in Major League Baseball

    Open Access•John C Phillips•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•1983•Cited by: 13•References: 8

The issue of racial discrimination in sport has generated a solid body of literature. In the professional baseball industry two forms of discrimination have been apparent: 'marginality' - the tendency to exclude blacks of marginal ability in favor of whites, and 'centrality'-the tendency to exclude qualified black players from positions which involve interaction with and control of the action of teammates. Data from 1960 to 1980 reveal a diminuti…

  • School Failure and Delinquency Which Causes Which

    Open Access•John C Phillips, Delos H Kelly•ARTICLE•Criminology•1979•Cited by: 16•References: 26

An extensive literature has developed on the relationship between school failure and adolescent misconduct. Almost all of this literature has assumed that school failure is causally prior to adolescent misconduct. but little systematic attention has been devoted to the critical issue of causal order. of misconduct is causally prior to school failure, most of the recent work on the school‐delinquency linkage would have to be rejected. Given a work…

  • Some Methodological Problems in Sport Sociology Literature

    Open Access•John C Phillips•ARTICLE•International Review of Sport…•1977

No methodological critique should be seen as an attack on an existing study. Rather such critiques should be seen as a call to a community of scholars to re- examine or reassess work that may have seemed "finished." In view of the rela tively low esteem accorded to sport sociology (at least in the United States) it may be proper to emphasize that the problems discussed above are by no means limited to the area of sport sociology. Indeed, they are…
