  • Meritocracy, Recognition and Double Consciousness: Why Black and Muslim Italians Move to (and Sometimes Leave) Post-Brexit Britain

Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2025•References: 10

This article rethinks meritocratic ideology as practical knowledge that transforms through biographies of social and geographical mobility. Drawing on 37 interviews with Black and Muslim Italians living in Britain or returned to Italy, the article shows that meritocracy is rarely invoked as a coherent ideology but works as practical, embodied commonsense about the world order, with Britain leading a hierarchy of European societies. The article ex…

  • Against culture? Class analysis, strategic essentialism and methodological nationalism after Beverley Skeggs' Formations of Class and Gender

    Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 64

Beverley Skeggs' first book ( Formations of Class and Gender [ FoC&G]) has been central to the study of class and culture, pushing it towards a more sustained consideration of intersections with gender and, to a lesser extent, race. Yet, some tensions within Skeggs' work remain unrecognised, and hence unresolved, in recent debates about class, culture and their link with intersecting inequalities. This article argues that FoC&G encapsulates two d…

  • The other Eurostars: Lifestyle migration, class and race among vocationally trained Italians

    Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•New Community•2023•Cited by: 10•References: 38

This article investigates the aspirations for adventure, cosmopolitanism and self-exploration among non-graduate EU migrants from working- and lower-middle-class backgrounds. Drawing on interviews with Italians who moved to England after the 2008 economic crisis, and focusing on participants with vocational school diplomas, the article explores participants’ lifestyle imaginaries, how these contextualise participants’ economic concerns, and how t…

  • The coloniality of distinction: Class, race and whiteness among post-crisis Italian migrants

    Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2021•Cited by: 11•References: 25

This article explores how strategies of class distinction reproduce racialised hierarchies between 'modern' and 'backward' European populations. Drawing on 57 interviews with Italian migrants who moved to England after the 2008 economic crisis, and combining Bourdieusian class analysis and decolonial critique, the article shows that migrants in different social positions are equally concerned with claiming closeness to the UK's meritocratic cultu…

  • Reconceptualizing Aesthetic Cosmopolitanism: Evidence From the Early Consecration of Anglo-American Pop-Rock in Italy

    Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 28

This article explores how foreign, recently imported cultural forms can redefine the dynamics of legitimation in national cultural fields. Drawing on archival research, the article discusses the early consecration of Anglo-American pop-rock in 1970s Italy and analyzes the articles published by three specialist music magazines. Findings reveal the emergence of a shared pop-rock canon among Italian critics, but also that this "cosmopolitan capital"…

  • Unequal Youth Migrations: Exploring the Synchrony between Social Ageing and Social Mobility among Post-Crisis European Migrants

    Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•Sociology•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 36

This article explores how symbolic boundaries between youth and adulthood shape experiences of upward and downward social mobility among EU migrants. Drawing on 56 biographical interviews with Italians who moved to England after the 2008 economic crisis, and focusing on three individual case studies, the article reveals that normative understandings of adulthood emerge as a central concern from participants’ biographical accounts, and that they m…

  • Beyond Distinction: Theorising Cultural Evaluation as a Social Encounter

    Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 30

This article expands recent attempts to theorise the role of culture's materiality in Pierre Bourdieu's relational epistemology. Drawing on empirical research about the reception of rock and jazz in Italy, and focusing on the evaluative practices of Italian critics, the article theorises cultural evaluation as a social encounter between the dispositions of social actors (i.e. their habitus) and the aural, visual and narrative properties of cultur…

  • Cultural production and the morality of markets: Popular music critics and the conversion of economic power into symbolic capital

    Open Access•Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•Poetics•2015•Cited by: 12•References: 28

  • Is that girl a monster? Some notes on authenticity and artistic value in Lady Gaga

    Varriale, Simone Varriale•ARTICLE•Celebrity Studies•2012•Cited by: 1

This article will discuss a specific reading of Lady Gaga's image as something new and provocative in pop and celebrity culture. Since the release of The Fame Monster (2009), arguments for the postmodern ‘subversiveness’ of Gaga have emerged both in music journalism and scholarly writing. Such claims surprise me for one basic reason: the extent to which Gaga's star persona is related, in many media texts, to specific discourses about the cultural…
