  • In Dire Straits

    Open Access•August Hoffman, August D Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnobiology Letters•2026

In April of 2025, the for-profit biotech company Colossal Biosciences garnered mass media attention by announcing they had “de-extincted” the dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus) with the use of CRISPR gene-editing technology. Colossal and others heralded it as the future of endangered species conservation. In response, many in the larger scientific and conservation communities qualified or dismissed the claims to de-extinction based on sound genomic, phyl…

  • Rethinking Ai for Good

Open Access•Faranak Hardcastle, Sujatha Raman et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2025

AI for Social Good (AI4SG) initiatives have emerged in various sectors. However, AI's non-neutral nature challenges claims that the “good” can simply be inferred by association with broad goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The lack of a clear definition of "the good” or what it entails in practice risks making AI4SG an empty signifier. This ambiguity allows unchecked interventions, undermining societal efforts to align future…

  • Transformative spiritualities

Azza Karam, André Van Der Braak et al.•BOOK•Transformative spiritualities•2022

The Churches of the World Council of Churches have been on a "Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace"- together with people of goodwill—since they met for their assembly in Busan in 2013. Building peace with justice has been at the heart of the ecumenical movement since its beginnings. It reflects the call of the churches in a wounded world caused by systemic injustice - racism, sexism, xenophobia, economic exploitation, and violence among humans and ag…

  • Prosuming Identity

    Open Access•Jenny L Davis, Jenny Davis•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2012•Cited by: 6•References: 29

Prosumption refers to the blurring of production and consumption. Although this has always been present (Ritzer, 2009), the contemporary era creates an environment in which prosumption can flourish. Specifically, the presence of Web 2.0 has led to an abundance of user-generated content, produced by those who consume it. I wish to argue here for an extension of the theoretical idea of prosumption into the arena of identity. Currently, prosumption …

  • Architecture of the personal interactive homepage

    Open Access•Jenny L Davis, Jenny Davis•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 14

From a symbolic interactionist perspective, this work looks at the construction of self and identity through MySpace. Using ethnographic methods, I look to answer two questions: (1) how does the physical architecture of the personal interactive homepage (PIH) facilitate interaction and self presentation in particular ways? (2) How does self presentation through the PIH impact processes of negotiated self construction more largely? I discuss three…
