  • Frustrated Respectability: Local Culture and Politics in London's Docklands

    Open Access•Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•1993•Cited by: 3•References: 4

How useful is the concept of urban community in modern society? The author considers the arguments of some observers of modernity who view local community as insignificant. Although the economic foundations of such community might well be eroded, definitions of local identity continue to have significance in lived culture and are important in shaping the political views of those who live in traditional working-class neighbourhoods. The history of…

  • The Idea of a European Superstate: Public Justification and European Integration

    Open Access•Glyn Morgan•BOOK•Idea of a European Superstate•2009•Cited by: 21

Is there a justification for European integration? The Idea of a European Superstate examines this--the most basic--question raised by the European Union. In doing so, Glyn Morgan assesses the arguments put forward by eurosceptics and their critics. In a challenge to both sides of the debate, Morgan argues in support of a European superstate. Unless Europe forms a unitary sovereign state, Europe will remain, so he maintains, weak and dependent fo…

  • Hayek, Habermas, and European integration

    Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•Critical Review•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Recent conflicts both within Europe and between Europe and the United States suggest that Europe's current political arrangements need to be adjusted. F.A. Hayek and Jürgen Habermas argued, albeit on very different grounds, for European political integration. Their arguments ultimately are not persuasive, but a "United States of Europe" can be justified—on the basis of its contribution to European security

  • Is the European Union imperialist

    Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A frequent argument of Eurosceptics is that the EU acts as an imperialist power towards its own member states. This argument has recently gained traction both in Hungary, where Prime Minister Orban complains of the EU’s moral and political imperialism, and also in the UK, where arguments that the EU intends to reduce post-Brexit UK to a ‘vassal state’ have motivated Eurosceptics to support a no-deal withdrawal. There remains an important paradox …

  • Alexis de Tocqueville, the modern democratic nation-state, and its competitors

    Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•The Tocqueville Review/La revue…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper draws on Tocqueville’s Democracy in America to distinguish three different types of modern democracy—(i) the democratic nation-state, (ii) the post sovereign, multinational democracy, and (iii) the populist national democracy. The paper argues that all three have characteristic deficits—respectively, a security deficit, a democratic deficit, and a liberal deficit. The paper discusses the likely impact of Brexit and Trump on these forms…

  • Security, Stability, and International Order

    Open Access•Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article assesses the pros and cons of Amitai Etzioni's security first grand strategy. It argues that such a grand strategy is not much less ambitious than the Bush doctrine that it seeks to replace. The article is especially critical of Etzioni's proposals for forcible deproliferation. Rather than a security first grand strategy, the article defends a stability-first grand strategy that relies on the Westphalian state system, nuclear deterre…

  • Realism and European Political Integration: The lessons of the united states

    Open Access•Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•European Political Science•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 19

The paper examines the claim that Europe is committed to a Kantian liberal model of international order, while the United States is committed to a Hobbesian realist model of international order. The paper argues that the realist approach to international order is more plausible than the liberal approach. Furthermore, the realist approach to international order remains fully consistent with the project of European political integration

  • Question 1: How Should the Role of Citizen by Designed and Performed? Social Justice and the Varieties of Capitalism: Individuality, Flexibility, and Social Well-Being

    Open Access•Margarita Estévez-Abe, Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2005•References: 11

Advanced industrial societies organize their national economies and their welfare states in fundamentally different ways. In recognition of this fact, social scientists have identified a variety of different types (or models) of capitalism. Anglo-US countries are generally taken to constitute one distinctive “liberal model” of capitalism that differs from the European and Japanese alternative models. The liberal model of capitalism is often criti…

  • Gray’s Elegy for Progress

    Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2006•References: 6

Gray’s alternative to liberalism is unworkable in practice and implausible in theory. The essay distinguishes Socratic, Durkheimian and Scottish Enlightenment liberalism, arguing that Gray’s critique of liberalism as historically contingent is ineffective against the Socratic version of liberalism. Whereas the liberalism of Durkheim and Adam Smith is perhaps dependent on historical circumstances, Socratic liberalism simply upholds an iconoclastic…

    Open Access•Glyn Morgan•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Politics•2017

The ongoing Eurozone crisis has brought to the fore the discourse of “austerity.” A number of countries, most dramatically Greece, have been called upon to institute policies of fiscal austerity as a condition of further support from the international financial community. The situation has generated some serious disagreements among economists, policymakers, and indeed important financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and th…
