Social and Cultural Hazards, from the 3.11 Disaster through Today’s Global Warming
This case study is an anthropological reflection on the impact of multiple disaster events on the culture and economy of the Hamadōri coastal area of Fukushima, Japan. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown; the pandemic of 2020; and today’s global warming have affected this area’s economic, touristic, and cultural practices, such as the Soma Nomaoi Calvary tradition. Outcomes exemplify the concept of punctuated entropy: a perm…
Diaspora Language
A “diaspora language” refers to the languages that are spoken by people in a “diasporic” community – that is, a group of people scattered around to different places in the world but having (or feeling that they have) a shared common ancestry. These languages are formed and reformed in relation to language ideology. These diaspora languages are used to foster solidarity and notions of a common identity among the members of the community, or facili…

Suicide Prevention Needs to Be a Top Japanese National Priority
The number of deaths by suicide in Japan on March 1, 2010 was 138. The current administration had monitored the total number of daily suicides in 2004 and 2008, but this was the highest daily total. This does not include the number of deaths by car accidents on that day. The average number of deaths due to car accidents in 2009 was 4,914, or about 13 people per a day. The suicide rate is almost ten times higher than the rate of deaths by car acci…

Ethnic Identity, Culture, and Race
Today, three million people of Japanese descent are citizens of almost every nation in the world. In contrast to other transplanted peoples-like African, Irish, Chinese, Jewish, or Mexican migrants -the individual stories of Japanese transnational migrants and Nikkei (people of Japanese descent who were born and grew up abroad) have received little scholarly attention. Discussions of Japanese transnational migrants and Nikkei have focused on soci…
The Unknown Korean War
This is the sixtieth anniversary of the start of the Korean War. We are now just starting to learn about the mass murder of civilians by both Korean armies and the United States, and the policies that made this possible. In South Korea, little by little the remains of some of these victims are being uncovered through the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Korean citizens

Lawsuit Seeks Japanese Government Compensation for Siberian Detention
We submitted a "Request for Compensation for Siberian Detention" to the Kyoto Local Court on December 26, 2007, seeking redress from the Japanese government. We are asking for ¥30,000,000 for each plaintiff as compensation (and accepting ¥10,000,000 compensation as partial settlement). At the beginning of the suit the number of plaintiffs was thirty. However that number has increased to forty-one today. Testimony from each plaintiff will be heard…
Racial Journeys
On June 13, 2007, the US Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs created a commission to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the relocation, internment, and deportation of Latin Americans of Japanese descent to the United States during World War II. Among these were almost two thousand Peruvian citizens and permanent residents. Though not as widely known as the famous saga of internment and redress of Japanese…

"The Time Has Come When Anyone Could Become a "Health Care Refugee
Some say that these days Japan is entering "the new era of heath care deterioration." The current government has just rammed through the Diet the Medical Care Reform Act, which drastically curtails spending on hospitalization insurance and medical care for the elderly. This regressive revision of the health care insurance law most directly affects older people. What is going to happen to people who need hospitalization or long-term care? What kin…
