Making fiction out of fact
This article explores fictionality within the context of the discourse of conspiracy. In particular it examines the phenomenon of ‘false flag’ narratives: alternative versions of an event constructed by individuals who have become convinced that a news story has in fact been staged for malfeasant purposes. The article uses figure-ground analysis, which facilitates examination of how attention is distributed within a text. Specifically, it enables…
Gay, Lesbian, and Queer Sexuality
Anthropological studies of gay, lesbian, and queer sexuality examine its social meanings and functions; political conflicts and movements related to sexuality; the complex relationship between sexuality, gender, and identity; sexual violence and coercion; the effects of globalization; and associated health and medical practices, especially with respect to HIV/AIDS. Ethnographic research has documented the social acceptance of nonbinary gender rol…

During the mass anti-Putin protests of 2011-2012, which were widely experienced as an awakening of political subjectivities, to talk wi…

We investigate the nature of protests by students (age 18 and older) in Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, and Yemen by using subsamples of students from nationally representative and acclaimed public opinion data (the 2006–07 Arab Barometer). We find between 22.1% (Jordan) and 54.7% (Yemen) participated in either the signing of petitions, or marching in street protests, or both between the years 2003–07. To explain student protest participation, we draw …
