The Pedagogical State: Education and the Politics of National Culture in Post-1980 Turkey
This book examines how interest groups in Turkey, including religious nationalists, neoliberal industrialists, and the military, promote and develop their particular worldviews through education and in school curricula. The aim is to explain how these competing groups define schoolchildren's educational experiences and how mass schooling creates the contexts in which children make sense of knowledge, power, and social change. The Pedagogical Stat…

Territorializing Armenians: Geo-texts, and political imaginaries in French-occupied Cilicia, 1919-1922
This article examines the petitions, letters, opinion pieces and scholarly works that Armenian intellectuals generated to convince French decision‐makers to carve an Armenian nation‐state out of Cilicia (present‐day southern Turkey). This colonial encounter took place within the process by which European powers dismembered the defeated Ottoman state following the First World War. These “geo‐texts”—textual representations of territory and populati…
Nuriye's dilemma: Turkish lessons of democracy and the gendered state
In this article, I explore political consciousness and its relation to language, action, and power relations among schoolchildren and their parents in a small town in southern Turkey. More specifically, I draw on Wittgenstein's concept of language games to examine the ambiguous and indeterminate links between political discourse and educational practices, especially how these links are refracted in everyday life. Thus, I show that the term democr…
Din-U Devlet All Over Again? The Politics of Military Secularism and Religious Militarism in Turkey Following the 1980 Coup
Current discussions on the political developments in Turkey frequently frame the struggles between the military and religious parties as a war between secularism and Islam and draw out incommensurable differences between the two sides. Indeed, the military establishment, which casts itself as the guardian of the secular republic, succeeded in 1997 in having the Supreme Court ban the Welfare Party, the first openly religious party ever to form a g…
Selim Deringil. The Well-Protected Domains: Ideology and the Legitimation of Power in the Ottoman Empire, 1876–1909. London: I. B. Tauris, 1998
In the past decade, studies on the nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire have taken an “archival turn.” Scholars, such as Engin Deniz Akarli, Suraiya Faroqhi, Hasan Kayali, Süevket Pamuk and Zeynep Celik, have begun reassessing the Ottoman archives in order to challenge the sweeping historical narratives of an earlier generation of scholars, like the theses about the inevitable demise of the empire or about the radical break in political culture with…
Documenting History, Historicizing Documentation: French Military Officials' Ethnological Reports on Cilicia
Archives are, as Michel-Rolph Trouillot has argued, 'the institutional sites of mediation between the sociohistorical process and the narrative about that process.' How this mediation structures the production of meaning, on the one hand, and historical knowledge, on the other, is the major problematic of this article. I focus on how certain textual models and modes of representation impart a particular sense of purpose to the archives. That is, …
