  • Advice to Clinicians on Communication from Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer and Parents of Children with Cancer

Open Access•Meghana Srinivas, Erica C Kaye et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Effective communication is integral to patient and family-centered care in pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) oncology and improving healthcare delivery and outcomes. There is limited knowledge about whether AYAs and parents have similar communication preferences and needs. By eliciting and comparing communication advice from AYAs and parents, we can identify salient guidance for how clinicians can better communicate. We performed sec…

  • Impossible nostalgia: Green affect in the landscapes of the Swedish Million Programme

    Open Access•J E Mack, John Mack et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 10

The modernist neighbourhoods of the so-called Swedish Million Programme (1965–1974) were to house a new citizenry in utopian cities of the future, where nuclear families would live in optimal conditions and where ‘rational’ landscapes included playgrounds, courtyards, and traffic separation. Even so, they are ‘problem areas’ in current popular representations: places without history and thus unworthy of preservation. Radical proposals suggest the…

  • Life Among Urban Planners: Practice, Professionalism, and Expertise in the Making of the City

Jennifer Mack, Michael Herzfeld•BOOK•Life Among Urban Planners•2020

  • An awkward technocracy: Mosques, churches, and urban planners in neoliberal Sweden

    Open Access•J E Mack, John Mack et al.•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 19

In Sweden, an ostensibly secular-majority society, urban planners facilitate the construction of new churches and mosques for minority religious groups. In this work, they typically perceive themselves as neutral professionals relying on a technical education. But since the 1980s, Swedish civil servants, including planners, have transformed from experts to managers, and their interactions with clients for mosques and churches often reveal their o…

  • The Construction of Equality: Syriac Immigration and the Swedish City

    Jennifer Mack, Jennifer W Mack•BOOK•Construction of Equality•2017

In The Construction of Equality , Jennifer Mack shows how Syriac-instigated architectural projects and spatial practices have altered the Swedish city’s built environment “from below.” Combining architectural, urban, and ethnographic tools through archival research, site work, participant observation, and interviews, Mack provides a unique take on urban development, social change, and the immigrant experience in Europe over a fifty-year period

  • Urban Design from Below: Immigration and the Spatial Practice of Urbanism

    John Mack, Jennifer Mack•ARTICLE•Public Culture•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Outlining a theory of “urban design from below,” this essay considers how so-called users have reshaped space at the urban scale, as I trace the history of immigrants’ transformations of a Swedish modernist new town neighborhood. Here a peripheral green strip that government planners of the 1960s classified as a buffer zone has slowly become a center of social and commercial life for Syriac Christians, a group that arrived en masse in the 1970s. …

  • Inhabiting the Imaginary: Factory Women at Home on Batam Island, Indonesia

Open Access•J E Mack, John Mack et al.•ARTICLE•Singapore Journal of Tropical…•2004

Batam Island, Indonesia, located a short ferry ride away from Singapore, is a place where tourism and industry have been developed simultaneously and a border area where “developed” and “developing” nations meet. Government officials, investing international corporations and the “factory women” who work in the island's industrial estates arrive in Batam ‐ native to none of them ‐ with their own preconceptions and goals. When challenges not forese…
