Collaborators Collaborating: Counterparts in Anthropological Knowledge and International Research Relations
As bio-capital in the form of medical knowledge, skills and investments moves with greater frequency from its origin in First World industrialized settings to resource-poor communities with weak or little infrastructure, countries with emerging economies are starting to expand new indigenous science bases of their own. The case studies here, from the UK, West Africa, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Latin America and elsewhere, explore the forms of c…
Investigating the Lived Experience of Recovery in People Who Hear Voices
Although there is evidence of both clinical and personal recovery from distressing voices, the process of recovery over time is unclear. Narrative inquiry was used to investigate 11 voice-hearers’ lived experience of recovery. After a period of despair/exhaustion, two recovery typologies emerged: (a) turning toward/empowerment, which involved developing a normalized account of voices, building voice-specific skills, integration of voices into dai…
Prevalence Estimates and Health-Related Correlates of Cognitive Impairment From a Probability Sample of Community-Residing Latino Elders
This study resulted in the identification of a cluster of socioeconomic, health, and mental health factors that may influence the functional ability of older Puerto Ricans
Differential Item Functioning (DIF) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE): Overview, Sample, and Issues of Translation
BACKGROUND: Various forms of differential item functioning (DIF) in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) have been identified. Items have been found to perform differently for individuals of different educational levels, racial/ethnic groups, and/or of groups whose first language is not English. The articles in this section illustrate the use of different methods to examine DIF in relation to English and Spanish language administration of the…

Care of the impaired elderly: Co-existence of formal and informal care systems in the Israeli Kibbutz
Gender, networks, and adaptation among an inner-city population
Assessment of stress‐buffering effects of social networks on psychological symptoms in an inner‐city elderly population
Social network researchers have been divided into two camps: those who propose that social networks have a direct effect on subsequent psychological symptoms and those who posit a stress-buffering effect as well. Previous research has been limited by rudimentary measures of social interaction and the absence of longitudinal data as well as by different approaches to the assessment of possible buffering effects. In the present study, using 19 soci…
Some Behavioral and Test Correlates of the Chapin Social Insight Test
With a sample of 45 adult males, correlations reinforced previous findings. Unlike earlier studies the cognitive component of the test was minimized in the present study
Note on Levy's Methodological Review of Studies on Short-Forms of the Wais
It is contended that only some of Levy's criticisms are appropriate to the studies reviewed. Others reflect a misconception of the purpose and function of studies on WAIS short-forms
Validity and Clinical Utility of the Satz and Mogel Abbreviated form of the Wais
IQ estimates based on WAIS protocols rescored by the abbreviated form are almost always within 6 IQ points of the full WAIS. The assumption was investigated that IQ estimates are as accurate when the abbreviated form is administered alone as they are when WAIS protocols are simply rescored. Thirty psychiatric patients responded first to the abbreviated WAIS and then responded to the items which were omitted. All IQ estimates from the abbreviated …
Effects of overt aggression on level of physiological arousal
Further Evaluation of an Abbreviated form of the Wais
WAIS protocols of 30 hospitalized psychiatric patients were rescored according to an abbreviated form introduced by Satz and Mogel. IQ estimates obtained from administration of the full WAIS were comparable. These results agree with the Satz and Mogel findings despite differences in age, sex distribution, and IQ range of the two samples. Unlike other short forms of the WAIS, the Satz and Mogel abbreviated version samples items from all 11 sub-sca…
Some contrast effects in social perception
