Ethnicity, cultural discontinuity and power brokers in northern Iraq: The case of the Shabak1
This article examines some aspects of the social organization of a marginal Kurdish-speaking group in north Iraq. The Shabak provide an example of a special type of social adaptation within an historically specific sociopolitical context where ethnicity and its attendant patronage system represented an organizational solution through which weak, special interest groups managed to protect their identities and insure their survival
