  • Vigilant Emigrants: Transatlantic Mobility and Class Formation between California and the Azores

    Open Access•Tim Burger•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2025•References: 4

This article examines the role of individual vigilance in the formation of class. Focusing on the upward social mobility of Azorean migrants, I show how being alert about one's sensed positionality orients and amplifies the generation of social class in a migratory setting. Over centuries, the Azores archipelago, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, has been left behind by its residents in pursuit of better livelihoods elsewhere. The resulting t…

  • Horticulture as history making: Dense action on lost land among Azorean smallholders

    Open Access•Tim Burger•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2025•References: 44

Depopulation has become a landmark transformation across different rural areas, one that is often accompanied by collective experiences of abandonment, crisis, and deprivation. On the Azores archipelago, Portugal, people encounter demographic decline as a disorienting loss of familiarity with their environment and especially their horticultural plots. Azorean depopulation, then, is best framed as a spatial phenomenon. Islanders describe their gra…

  • The Multi-Sided Ethnographer: Living the Field beyond Research

Open Access•Magnus Treiber, Tim Burger et al.•BOOK•Multi-Sided Ethnographer•2024

As ethnographic fieldwork blurs the boundaries between ›private‹ and ›professional‹ life, ethnographers always appear to be on duty, looking out for valuable encounters and waiting for the next moment of disclosure. Yet what lies in the gaps and pauses of fieldwork? The contributions in this volume dedicated to anthropologist Martin Sökefeld explore methodological and ethical dimensions of multi-sided ethnographic research. Based on diverse cases…

  • Money in an Actant World: Comparative Notes on Currency, Agency and Sociality

    Tim Burger•ARTICLE•Sociologus•2023•References: 30

Actor-network theory is an approach notable for distributing agency over a range of human and other-than-human actors hence questioning the existence of a given “society” and instead conceiving of materially heterogeneous collectives. So far, ANT has only shown fleeting interest in the study of money. This is surprising, given the literature emphasising the powerful, agency-bearing role ascribed to money in intersubjective relations and socioecon…

  • Men Who Shout at Goats: Agrarian Cultivation and Gendered Slaughter on an Azorean Island

    Open Access•Tim Burger•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Across many world regions, the informal slaughter of livestock occupies an important place in rural day-to-day realities. This article examines killing goats on São Jorge Island to show how attention to slaughter enhances our understanding of gendered selfhood, human-animal relations, and the impacts of depopulation. Building on ethnography of smallholder farmers who see their masculinity and livelihoods endangered by demographic decline, I argue…
