  • Reimagining community-centered engagement to guide offshore wind planning and development

    Open Access•Chris D Henderson, Kevin Duffy et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2026•References: 10

Community engagement in energy development is increasingly recognized as critical to align project design choices with the needs and perspectives of affected communities. However, offshore wind (OSW) development along the U.S. West Coast has often seen engagement efforts that are inconsistent, delayed, or disconnected from local decision-making. This study advances theoretical and applied understanding of public participation in energy planning b…

  • Investigating the trivariate reciprocal longitudinal relationships between purpose, loneliness, and cognitive function

    Open Access•Gabrielle N Pfund, Anthony D Ong et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•References: 7

Objectives As medical interventions for cognitive decline and dementia continue to evolve, the identification of modifiable psychosocial factors has become increasingly important. Sense of purpose and loneliness represent potential targets for intervention. In this study, we aimed to understand the potentially reciprocal relationship between sense of purpose, loneliness, and cognitive function. Methods The current project draws upon data from the…

  • Manifesto for Living in the Anthropocene

    Deborah Rose, J K Gibson-Graham et al.•BOOK•Manifesto for Living in the…•2015

The recent 10,000 year history of climatic stability on Earth that enabled the rise of agriculture and domestication, the growth of cities, numerous technological revolutions, and the emergence of modernity is now over. We accept that in the latest phase of this era, modernity is unmaking the stability that enabled its emergence. Over the 21st century severe and numerous weather disasters, scarcity of key resources, major changes in environments,…

  • The Rain Keeps Falling

Open Access•Deborah Rose, Deborah Bird Rose•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies Review•2013

The force of disaster hit me in the heart when, as a young woman, I heard Bob Dylan sing 'Hard Rain'. In a voice stunned by violence, the young man reports on a multitude of forces that drag the world into catastrophe. In the 1960s I heard the social justice in the song. In 2004 the environmental issues ambush me. The song starts and ends in the dying world of trees and rivers. The poet's words in both domains of justice are eerily prophetic. The…

  • What If the Angel of History Were a Dog

Open Access•Deborah Rose, Deborah Bird Rose•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies Review•2013•Cited by: 14

My title question comes from Walter Benjamin's ninth thesis on the philosophy of history. The answer I explore is that she is howling. I engage with some of the implications of the howling of living beings in a time of death. My concern is with death, and I must distinguish between two contexts of death. The first is the fact of death that inheres in life. Life, with the exception of some bacteria, involves death both for individuals and, it now …

  • Aboriginal life and death in Australian settler nationhood

    Open Access•Deborah Rose•ARTICLE•Aboriginal History Journal•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Hannah Arendt identifies the onset of genocide under the Nazi regime with the declaration that 'the German people not only were unwilling to have any Jews in Germany, but wished to make the entire Jewish people disappear from the face of the earth.' 1 Arendt famously, and unpopularly, contended that the crime was a crime against humanity, perpetrated upon the body of the Jewish people. 2 Eichmann's evidence concerning his lack of moral awareness …

  • Fitting into Country

Deborah Rose, Deborah Bird Rose•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2008•Cited by: 4

When Jessie Wirrpa1 went walkabout, she called out to her ancestors. “Give us fish,” she would call out, “the kids are hungry.” Jessie's country included the dead as well as the living, the Dreamin

  • Asthma Prevalence Among US Adults, 1998–2000

Deborah Rose, David M Mannino et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Objectives. We analyzed asthma prevalence among US adults by age, gender, race, Puerto Rican ethnicity, and other demographic, behavioral, health, and geographic variables. We hypothesized that high prevalences would be observed among Puerto Ricans and in the Northeast census region. Methods. We used data from the 1998 through 2000 US National Health Interview Surveys. Information on lifetime history of asthma and asthma in the past year was coll…

  • An Indigenous Philosophical Ecology

Open Access•Deborah Rose, Deborah Bird Rose•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2005

Can Indigenous ecological knowledge contribute to major debates in Western science and philosophy? I argue that it offers a ‘philosophical ecology’ that works synergistically with Western eco‐philosophy and some streams of ecological science. This paper takes up the challenge offered by Val Plumwood: that anthropology can contribute to the work of re‐situating the human. It examines an ecological philosophy of mutual benefits, and shows patterns,…

  • Fetal and Infant Mortality Review in Savannah, Georgia

    Open Access•Deborah Rose, Deborah Abbott Rose•ARTICLE•Illness Crisis & Loss•1999

When the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) program began in Savannah, Georgia, in April 1995, there were high hopes of reaching every woman via home interview who had lost a baby in the neonatal or postneonatal period, as well as those women who had experienced fetal loss after the twenty-week gestation mark or who had given birth to a fetus weighing 385 grams or more. After the first year, which was spent developing the program, making co…
