Multicompetence in L2 Language Play
Humor and language play have been recognized as important aspects of second language (L2) development. Qualitative studies that have documented the forms and functions of language play for adult and child L2 users have taken place largely in classroom settings. In order to gain a fuller understanding of such creative manipulations by L2 users, it is necessary to examine these phenomena across a variety of contexts. In this article, we explore the…
Formulaic Language, Creativity, and Language Play in a Second Language
Since the late 1990s, the field of applied linguistics has seen a revival of interest in the topic of linguistic creativity and language play, with several theoretical works spawning a variety of empirical studies of (second language) L2 learners. This chapter reviews recent literature in order to examine the reciprocal relationship between formulaic language and L2 language play. Formulaic language provides a point of reference against which oth…
Comparing Playful and Nonplayful Incidental Attention to Form
Current evidence demonstrating the importance of language play in second-language (L2) development rests largely on qualitative analyses of L2 discourse. Although these rich descriptions have illustrated a number of important functions of language play, further study of the phenomenon is necessary to understand its potential to facilitate learning. This article reports on research designed to compare learner recall of items that have been the foc…
The Changing World of Home Technology
We have entered the “digital decade,” when advances in technology will become deeply woven into home life. But how will technology evolve from an experience that is technologically challenging to an experience that is intuitive and fun? This article reviews new technologies and related possibilities that Microsoft is envisioning in the context of home life. As a specific example of the impact of home technology, we review lessons learned from the…

Sociocognitive conflict and intellectual growth
The child's attempts to overcome sociocognitive conflict, under certain specific cognitive and social conditions, can lead to a restructuring of the child's thinking on a supraordinate level
Values and Estimation of Word Frequencies
It was hypothesized that people scoring high on a value or need such as evaluative dependence (measured by the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, M-C SD) would be more sensitive to words relevant to this need than would low scoring Ss and thus would tend to overestimate the frequency of occurrence of the need-relevant words. Words chosen for frequency ratings varied on a good-bad dimension pertaining to human characteristics or behaviors, …
Effect of censure or praise and evaluative dependence on performance in a free-learning task
The purpose of the study was to determine how subtle gestural praise and censure interacted with evaluative dependence in affecting performance in a free-learning task. High and low levels of evaluative dependence were determined from scores on social desirability scale. In a follow-up experiment, evaluative dependence was observed when interaction was minimal and neither censure nor approval occurred. (Author)
