Rebecca Kugel. Making Relatives of Them
Red Codes and Removal
The Midwest is typically defined as a site of Indigenous erasure. But citizens of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma continue to live in their original homeland despite the official removal of their people from the Wabash River Valley in 1846. Myaamia families who stayed behind used fee simple family reserves as a tool to combat ethnic cleansing. Despite their keen understanding of American property law, settlers in the Hoosier state crafted "Red Codes,…

Replanting Cultures
Surviving Genocide
In 1814, Big Warrior, a Creek ally of General Andrew Jackson in the Red Stick War, conceded that “I found the General had great power to destroy me”(p.175). Surviving Genocide, Jeffrey Ostler’s masterful synthesis of American settler colonialism in the eastern half of the United States, situates Big Warrior’s words alongside those of the Chickamauga Cherokee, the Osage, the Shawnee, and countless other leaders of Native nations. Across linguistic…
Early adolescents’ views of media ratings in the context of a media literacy program in the U.S
Ratings and labels that warn audiences of sensitive content in media are largely in existence due to concern about potential media impact on young audiences. Largely absent from the research to date, however, are the voices of young people themselves on whether they find media ratings practices to be fair, accurate, and effective. Like many features of the media landscape, the current ratings systems may be taken for granted in the absence of med…
Savage Kin
Margaret M. Bruchac’s Savage Kin provides an intersectional analysis of the relationship between anthropologists and their interlocutors in the first half of the twentieth century. The book complements existing scholarship on American ethnology, but vastly expands our knowledge of the many Native women and men who provided access and traditional knowledge to anthropologists. Native men such as George Hunt (Kwakwaka ‘wakw), who worked with Franz B…
Rob Harper. Unsettling the West
The Ohio Valley during the American Revolution has long been a favored tableau of historians. Regional figures such as Daniel Boone, John Murray, White Eyes (Koquethagechton), and Guyasuta command our attention, living—and sometimes dying—for their stake in the fate of empires. In Unsettling the West: Violence and State Building in the Ohio Valley, historian Rob Harper argues that nascent states drove violence in the Ohio Valley. Through an exact…
US Special Forces
In the post-9/11 era the United States' (US) Special Operations Forces have become an increasingly prominent feature amongst the country's vast military options. This article is the first to examine US Special Forces through a critical discursive lens. The article examines the conditions of possibility that US security discourse constructs for its Special Forces, who use some methods of warfare which are more commonly associated with US enemies i…
Salvaging the Salvage Anthropologists
How should Native and non-Native scholars utilize the work of salvage anthropologists? In this study of Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, Carl Voegelin, and their research among the Shawnee, Stephen Warren and Ben Barnes suggest that Community-Engaged Scholarship (CES) offers a new path forward in examining the difficult legacy of the Boasians and their successors. Collaborative, team-based research can yield important new discoveries as tribal citizens …

"To Show the Public That We Were Good Indians"
On 19 June 1916, one hundred thousand tourists gathered together in Rock Island, Illinois, to watch an “Old Indian Village” go up in flames. President Wilson foreshadowed this theater of genocide earlier that evening. From the oval office, Wilson pushed a button that resulted in the electrification of the Fort Armstrong Centennial Celebration. The following morning celebrants woke up from this awesome display of regeneration through violence and …

The majority (107) of those observed were whites; while 77 fell in the other race category. Of 184 observations, 86 were not “observed” by another in the bathroom. Observations were made in the …
