Cultural Connection and Well-being for American Indian Adolescents
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adolescents face health disparities resulting from historical traumas. There is a paucity of research focusing on mental health in AI/AN adolescents or the relationship between cultural connection and health. This project assesses the relationship between cultural identity and markers of mental health and well-being for AI/AN adolescents. Adolescents 12 to 18 years old from the Lumbee Tribe of North Carol…
Influenza and Pneumonia Vaccinations among North Carolina Adults with Diabetes
Objectives: In this study, we sought to elucidate the influenza and pneumonia vaccination practices of adults with diabetes in North Carolina. Methods: Using North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, we examined 2011-2018 trend data and demographic and health factors (2014-2018) in influenza (influenza vaccine receipt in the past year among adults ages 18+ years) and pneumonia (lifetime pneumonia vaccination receipt for adul…
Testing a Culturally Adapted Colorectal Cancer Screening Decision Aid Among American Indians: Results from a Pre–Post Trial
Purpose: American Indian adults have not experienced decreases in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality observed in other races or ethnic groups and their screening rates are low. Decision aids that explain available CRC screening options are one potential strategy to promote screening. The goal of this study was to test the effect of a culturally adapted decision aid on CRC-related outcomes among American Indian adults, including scree…
Health insurance coverage among American Indians and Alaska Natives in the context of the Affordable Care Act
Objectives: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) have a unique healthcare system uniquely interwoven with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The aim of this study is to document changes in health insurance among AI/AN adults before and after implementation of the ACA. Design: We used data from the American Community Survey from 2008 to 2016 to examine trends in health insurance. We compared to Non-Hispanic Whites and stratified AI/AN adults wi…
Baseline Assessment of a Healthy Corner Store Initiative: Associations between Food Store Environments, Shopping Patterns, Customer Purchases, and Dietary Intake in Eastern North Carolina
In 2016, the North Carolina (NC) Legislature allocated $250,000 to the NC Department of Agriculture, to identify and equip small food retailers to stock healthier foods and beverages in eastern NC food deserts (the NC Healthy Food Small Retailer Program, HFSRP). The purpose of this study was to examine associations between food store environments, shopping patterns, customer purchases, and dietary consumption among corner store customers. We surv…
Perceptions and Psychosocial Correlates of Bullying among Lumbee Indian Youth
Although bullying has been linked to suicide among youth, little is known about bullying in American Indians, a population at high risk for suicide. Qualitative data from focus groups with Lumbee Indian youth (N = 31, 16 males, 15 females, 12-17 years of age) and in-depth interviews with gatekeepers in the Lumbee community revealed that bullying is common, and is perceived to contribute to depression and suicide. Youth expressed powerlessness to …
The contribution of social support and social strain to depressive symptoms in African American, Native American, and European American women
Positive and negative aspects of social relations and their association with depressive symptoms were examined for a sample of Native American, African American and European American women ( N = 249). Support was associated with lower depressive symptoms, whereas strain was associated with higher depressive symptoms. Further, European American women were advantaged only by high levels of support compared to the women of color; at moderate and low…
Depressive Symptoms and Diabetes Self-Management Among Rural Older Adults

Population-Based Prevention of Obesity: The Need for Comprehensive Promotion of Healthful Eating, Physical Activity, and Energy Balance: A Scientific Statement From American Heart Association Council …
Obesity is a major influence on the development and course of cardiovascular diseases and affects physical and social functioning and quality of life. The importance of effective interventions to reduce obesity and related health risks has increased in recent decades because the number of adults and children who are obese has reached epidemic proportions. To prevent the development of overweight and obesity throughout the life course, population-…
Health Differences Among Lumbee Indians Using Public and Private Sources of Care
Context: Of 2.4 million American Indians, approximately 60% are eligible to receive Indian Health Service (IHS) benefits, leaving many to seek care elsewhere. It is unknown if their quality of care, health behaviors, and health status vary by source of care, as demonstrated for other populations. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether preventive services, health behaviors, and number of health conditions vary as a function of…
