Where to Start: An Evaluation of Primary Data-Collection Modes in an Address-Based Sampling Design
As address-based sampling becomes increasingly popular for multimode surveys, researchers continue to refine data-collection best practices. While much work has been conducted to improve efficiency within a given mode, additional research is needed on how multimode designs can be optimized across modes. Previous research has not evaluated the consequences of mode sequencing on multimode mail and phone surveys, nor has significant research been co…

P1-33 Adult DNA methylation in relation to prenatal nutrition and risk factors for cardio-vascular disease
Epigenetic changes may play an important role in the development of adult disease. Exposure to a prenatal famine environment has been associated with a persistent decrease in DNA methylation of the IGF2 gene, and other early life factors like birthweight with adult genomic DNA methylation. We evaluated genomic DNA methylation in relation to prenatal nutrition and CVD risk factors. Our study includes 353 births from three clinics with prenatal exp…
Decreasing disparity in cholesterol screening in minority communities—findings from the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health 2010
BACKGROUND: Highly controlled research projects demonstrated success in preventing and controlling cardiovascular diseases. Community-based programs have yet to demonstrate significant influence. Data on large-scale community-level interventions targeting minority communities are limited. The aim of this study is to measure the impact of the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH 2010) project, a community-based intervention to e…
Self-reported Health Status and Mortality in a Multiethnic US Cohort
The authors examined the relation between self-reported health status and mortality among the following racial/ethnic groups: Native Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, blacks, whites, and Hispanics. They pooled 1986-1994 data from the National Health Interview Survey to obtain information on more than 700,000 cohort participants. Although fewer than 5,000 Native Americans are included in this cohort, the data provide information previously unava…
Socioeconomic status and morbidity in the last years of life
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the effect of socioeconomic status, as characterized by level of education, on morbidity and disability in the last years of life. METHODS: The analysis used data from the National Health Interview Survey (1986-1990), with mortality follow-up through December 1991. RESULTS: Among 10,932 decedents 50 years or older at baseline interview, educational attainment was inversely associated with long-term limitation of a…
Mortality patterns among adult Hispanics: Findings from the NHIS, 1986 to 1990
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the mortality pattern of the adult Hispanic population in the United States. METHODS: This was a cohort study using data from the National Health Interview Survey from 1986 through 1990. Deaths were ascertained by matching the National Death Index through 1991. RESULTS: This representative national sample included 297,640 non-Hispanic Whites, 53,552 Blacks, and 27,239 Hispanics, all aged 18 year…
