  • On the Structure and Composition of Copper and Tin Ingots Excavated from the Shipwreck of Uluburun

Andreas Hauptmann, Robert Maddin et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2002

We report on the structural and chemical composition of copper and tin ingots from the Late Bronze Age shipwreck of Kas/Uluburun, found at the southern coast of Anatolia. The ship carried ten tons of copper and one ton of tin. The cargo thus represents the "world market" bulk metal in the Mediterranean. It is the aim of this paper to evaluate the quality of metal traded during this period and to discuss the making of these ingots. Cores drilled f…

  • The Cape Gelidonya Shipwreck and the Bronze Age Metals Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean

James D Muhly, Tamara Stech Wheeler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1977•Cited by: 2

Controversy has surrounded the identification of the home port of the ship wrecked off Cape Gelidonya, Turkey. In an attempt to contribute further information pertinent to the solution of this problem, samples for metallurgical study were taken from eight of the copper ingots that were carried on the ship: four oxhide-shaped, two plano-convex, and two slab-shaped. Analysis of these samples shows that, with a single exception, the structure and co…

  • A Steel Tool of the Fourth Century B.C. From Al Mina in Syria

Tamara Stech Wheeler, James D Muhly et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•1976

The site of Al Mina in northern Syria was selected for excavation by C. L. Woolley as an adjunct to his work at Alalakh, which aimed to clarify the relationship between Minoan Crete and the Near East. In this respect, Alalakh was more rewarding than Al Mina because no material at the latter site antedated the eighth century B.C.; the shifting course of the Orontes River had caused erosion of part of the mound at Al Mina and by constant silting ha…
