  • Radiocarbon Dating Historical Mortars

Open Access•Alf Lindroos, Åsa Ringbom et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Cited by: 16•References: 13

Lime lumps and bulk mortars show different 14 C contamination when analyzed in several CO 2 fractions isolated from the effervescence of an ongoing hydrolysis reaction. Age profiles of both materials are therefore highly complementary and together they can provide a reliable date. Furthermore, they can also reveal the complexity of the radiocarbon ( 14 C) distribution within the mortar and thus prevent over-interpretation of the data. The lime lu…

  • Building Trajan's Markets 2

Lynne C Lancaster, Lynne Lancaster•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2000•Cited by: 1

The well-preserved state of many parts of Trajan's Markets provides the opportunity for a detailed study of the building techniques used there, which in turn sheds light on the construction process. Topics included in this paper are the planning of the drainage, design of multi-story buildings with noncongruent plans, and organization and protection of the building site. They are discussed in relation to specific archaeological evidence from vari…

  • Building Trajan's Column

Lynne C Lancaster, Lynne Lancaster•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1999•Cited by: 4

Trajan's Column is best known for its sculptured spiral frieze celebrating Trajan's victories in the Dacian Wars, but it is also a complex architectural monument representing an impressive feat of engineering. The Column is made up of 29 blocks of Luna marble weighing from 25 to 77 tons, the highest of which had to be raised to 38.4 m above ground. In this paper I discuss the evidence both for the construction of the Column and for the organizati…

  • Building Trajan's Markets

Lynne C Lancaster, Lynne Lancaster•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1998•Cited by: 22

This paper examines the use of two building techniques at Trajan's Markets: "bonding" courses of bipedales and brick linings used as formwork for vaulting. The distribution of these two techniques provides evidence for the distribution of the workforce and the organization of the building site. The pattern of the bonding courses suggests that they were used as organizational tools by setting certain key heights and in at least one case by providi…
