  • The Middle East

Peter Beaumont, Gerald Blake et al.•BOOK•Middle East•2016

This book, first published in 1976 and in this second edition in 1988, combines an examination of the political, cultural and economic geography of the Middle East with a detailed study of the region’s landscape features, natural resources, environmental conditions and ecological evolution. The Middle East, with its extremes of climate and terrain, has long fascinated those interested in the fine balance between man and his environment, and now i…

  • Colonel Leake's collections

Malcolm Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2012

The acquisition in 1864 of Colonel Leake's collections, in particular his coins, was one of the most significant accessions to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. However, it was not without controversy within the University. The University had little money of its own and some took the view that it should be spent on other projects. Funds would have to be diverted from the Fitzwilliam Fund which would delay the completion of the Museum building, e…

  • Family Size in the Peloponnese (Southern Greece) in 1700

    Open Access•Malcolm Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2001

This article initially presents a reworking of data in a Venetian census of 1700 for the Peloponnese, a region in southern Greece. The analysis is then compared with one based on another Venetian document dated either to 1702 or 1711, and a mean family size of about 4.0 is confirmed. The calculations for 1700 are refined to produce calculations of mean family size for urban and rural communities (3.60 and 4.17, respectively). The results are then…

  • Settlement Pattern Change in the Morea (Peloponnisos), c.A.D. 1700-1830

Open Access•Elena Frangakis, Malcolm Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies•1987

The historiography of the Ottoman period (Tourkokratia) in what is now the state of Greece contains many untested propositions about both the nature and the consequences of Turkish rule (Hatzidimitriou 1982). Amongst these is the notion that during the Ottoman occupation the Christian population — or at least a sizeable proportion of it — was driven into the mountains. Our paper sets out to test the hypothesis — for such it is — using readily ava…

  • Physical Geography and Settlements

    Open Access•Malcolm Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1973•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Physical conditions have an important and many-faceted influence upon the human occupation and use of an area. Their influence is not always direct, but depends upon the perception of the physical environment by a resident or immigrant group. Only a part of the perceived environment affects decisionmaking and influences behavioural patterns as expressed, for example, in the siting of settlements and the use of land for subsistence. Behaviour, in …
