A convergence research approach to resolving ‘wicked problems’: Lessons from an interdisciplinary research team in land use science
Many contemporary social and environmental problems are increasingly ‘wicked.’ Convergence research offers an effective approach to tackle wicked problems by integrating diverse epistemologies, methodologies, and expertise. Yet, there exists little discussion of how to develop and employ a convergence research approach. This article describes our collaborative research efforts to achieve convergence research and team science. For over a decade, w…
Fandom, Place Protection, and Urban Planning: Two Sporting Case Studies
This study explores the intersections between the study of sport and the study of the city through the extension of sport history to themes traditionally explored by geography—notably urban planning scholars. Its focus is two case studies related to urban planning decisions in early millennial Sydney, Australia. Through an examination of public submissions in response to building development applications made by two community-owned professional s…
Acknowledging Cocaine Capital in Central American Development
Cocaine trafficking has a significant but understudied influence on Central American economies. The economic implications of this trade have repercussions for both regional development and drug control policy debates, and therefore deserve greater attention. Towards that end, in this paper we provide estimates of 1) the value of trade of primary cocaine movements that were delivered to Central America, by country (excluding El Salvador) between 2…
Narcotrafficking and Land Control in Guatemala and Honduras
On frontiers dominated by illicit activities such as narcotrafficking, criminal organizations’ usurpation of land and resources is profoundly changing rural livelihoods and prospects for biodiversity conservation. Prior work has demonstrated how drug trafficking catalyzes forest loss and smallholder dispossession but does not make clear the extent to which the long-term control of land is moved from state, Indigenous, or smallholders to criminal …

Sport and the British World, 1900–1930: Amateurism and National Identity in Australasia and Beyond
This book provides a lively study of the role that Australians and New Zealanders played in defining the British sporting concept of amateurism. In doing so, they contributed to understandings of wide

Learning outcomes assessment and History: Teqsa, the After Standards Project and the QA/QI challenge in Australia
Higher education in Australia is currently in a state of flux, with the Federal Government’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency commencing operations in January 2012. The ‘After Standards Project’ has been working with Australian university history departments and the Australian Historical Association, educating and empowering the discipline to act as a united community and assert ownership of a standards process. This article provid…

Palaeoflood records for the Red River, Manitoba, Canada, derived from anatomical tree-ring signatures
Palaeoflood records for the Red River in southern Manitoba, Canada, were derived from anatomical tree-ring signatures in Quercus macrocarpa (Michx) collected at 16 living-tree sites, several historical buildings and archaeological sites, and subfossil logs buried in river alluvium. Prolonged inundation of trees during spring and early summer induces the development of anatomical anomalies (flood rings) that provide a proxy record of extreme flood…
Hydroclimatic Change in Southern Manitoba Since A.D. 1409 Inferred from Tree Rings
A record of estimated annual (prior August to current July) precipitation derived from a regional bur oak ( Quercus macrocarpa Michx.) tree-ring chronology indicates that southern Manitoba's hydroclimate has been relatively stable over the last 200 yr. Although this stability was interrupted briefly by pronounced wet intervals in the late A.D. 1820s and 1850s, hydroclimatic conditions since permanent Euro-Canadian settlement were much less variab…
Indigenous people and co-management: Implications for conflict management
Canadian Landform Examples: Red River, Red River Valley, Manitoba
The flat topography of the Red River Valley reflects the morphology of underlying bedrock covered with late Quaternary glacial and glaciolacustrine sediments. The meandering Red River occupies a shallow stream‐cut valley that became incised into the Red River Valley plain following the final recession of glacial Lake Agassiz. Extreme flows carried by the river overtop the sides of the stream‐cut valley and spread laterally up to several tens of k…
Bryn Mawr College Excavations in Tuscany, 1974
Dr. Guglielmo Maetzke, Soprintendente alle Antichita d'Etruria, gave Bryn Mawr College permission to excavate at Poggio Civitate during the spring and summer of 1973.* The season's work was extraordinarily varied. In May, Erik Nielsen completed th initial exploration of the small nec op is located on the W slopes of Poggio Aguzzo.2 During the remainder of the season we continued explo ing the structures sealed under the floo levels and the debris…
