Mestizaje, comercio y resistencia: La Guajira durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII
Mestizaje, comercio y resistencia is a welcome contribution to the study of frontier colonization in eighteenth-century New Granada. Focusing particularly on the Wayúu—the Spaniards’ “Guajiros” and the largest native group inhabiting the Guajira Peninsula—this study sets out to throw light on the succession of rebellions and uprisings that took place there in the second half of the eighteenth century (p. 35). Although the reader must wait until t…

Contemporary French Philosophy: Modernity and the Persistence of the Subject
French philosophy and cultural theory continue to hold a prestigious and influential position in European thought. One of the central themes of contemporary French philosophy is its concern with the theoretical and political status of the subject, a question which has been broached by structuralists and poststructuralists through an analysis of the construction of the subject in and by language, discourse, power and ideology.Contemporary French P…

A Byzantine Well-Deposit from Anemurium (Rough Cilicia)
Excavations at the coastal Cilician city of Anemurium (Eski Anamur) have recently brought to light a significant well-deposit containing pottery, lamps, coins and miscellaneous metal objects. The well appears to have been deliberately filled in on one occasion for reasons that we cannot now ascertain. The homogeneous nature of the deposit is indicated by the fact that joining sherds come indiscriminately from all levels in the deposit. Since all …

Hellenistic and Roman Buildings in the Mediaeval Walls of Mytilene
D UE TO THE CONTINUOUS OCCUPATION of the town site, ancient Mytilene for the most part lies buried under modern structures. Many Greek and Roman buildings, however, can still be recognized from elements reused in more recent construction. The late mediaeval fortification walls of the Genoese castle on the acropolis constitute a prime source of such material. At the invitation of the Town Council of Mytilene (Lesbos) the Canadian Archaeological In…
