  • One-way conversation with Philippe Van Parijs

    J A Laponce, Jean Laponce•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2015•References: 3

This essay reacts to Philippe Van Parijs’s arguments in favor of English as the global lingua franca and in favor of the territorial protection of the languages of minority nations. I agree with both arguments. But I see the case for the lingua franca as a matter of convenience rather than justice. And I don’t link territorial protection to the emergence of English, but instead ground it as a fundamental right of national self-determination

  • Language and Sovereignty Referendums

    J A Laponce, Jean Laponce•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2012•Cited by: 4

The hypothesis that sovereignty referendums tend to bring closer together the boundaries of states and languages is tested on 80 referendums ranging from 1791 to 2011. The hypothesis is supported for union, transfer, as well as separation referendums though less clearly so in the latter case. The data show also that the boundary convergence is more significant if the zone-by-zone option, rather than the traditional majoritarian rules, is properly…

  • Research on Ethnies and Nations

    J A Laponce, Jean Laponce•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2008•Cited by: 2

Many are the terms used to describe either groups or communities having in common actual or assumed inherited characteristics. So many and so ill-defined are these terms that they stand in the way of proper comparative research, at least when the comparison involves many ethnies, nations, and countries. The article recommends the use of more discriminating criteria to avoid confusion between “origin” and “identity,” between “grouping” and “commun…

    Open Access•J A Laponce, Jean Laponce•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2004

This report on research in progress is based on data obtained through written questionnaires administered to UBC (University of British Columbia) and Ottawa University students who were asked to rank the importance and the degree of satisfaction associated with 14 characteristics of either the self or the social environment (gender, age, nationality, profession, religion, preferred political party, place of birth, province of residence, city of r…

  • Minority Languages and Globalization

    J A Laponce•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2004•Cited by: 4

Globalization causes weak and powerful languages to be in increasingly frequent contact. Weaker languages are thus increasingly at risk of being sidelined and lost. The author considers some defensive strategies and concludes that the most likely to be effective are territorial concentration and diglossia and that government support is a major protection

    J A Laponce•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2001•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Since the end of the eighteenth century, two democratic revolutions have occurred in the way people, territories, and governments are related to one another. The first took place in Avignon in 1791 when, for the first time, people voted to change sovereignty; the second concerned Schleswig when, in 1920, people voted not only to change sovereignty but also to draw a new border. This article focuses on the latter type of plebiscite and uses as exe…

    Open Access•J A Laponce, Jean Laponce•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 8

The world language system is profoundly affected by the increase in the frequency and density of communication on a world scale. Most of the languages spoken today are not expected to survive the century and most of those surviving will lose or fail to get control of some higher functions of communication, notably in the fields of commerce and science. The minority languages best able to resist the pressure of more powerful competitors are those …

  • The Quebec sovereignty referendum of 1995

    J A Laponce•ARTICLE•Politikon•1999•References: 4

The first part of the article uses a bare tactic‐strategy model to explain the passivity of the Canadian government in the face of Quebec's near approval of the sovereignty option of the 1995 referendum. The second part considers some of the cultural and sociological obstacles to Canada changing its political system to adapt it to the needs of a multinational society. The analysis is restricted to the relations between Quebec and Canada to the ex…

    J A Laponce, Jagrup Singh Sekhon•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•1995•References: 7

Proceeding from bivariate correlations to multivariate analysis, the article tests the hypothesis that ethnic factors ‐ measured by minority religion (Jewish) and minority language (mother tongue other than French or English) ‐ are more powerful predictors of support for the Communist party of Canada than class factors measured by profession and trade union membership. The hypothesis is not verified on all measures, but the factor ‘minority mothe…

Politics is both game and warfare: game when it seeks to keep uncertain the outcome of a competition and to keep the opponent not only alive but eager to play; warfare when it seeks to destroy or permanently weaken the enemy. Depending upon the issues over which it is fought, politics will be more or less game, more or less warfare. A given society may keep its politics in a state of game unless certain issues, social status or religious freedom …

  • Left or Centre? The Canadian Jewish Electorate, 1953–1983

    Open Access•J A Laponce•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•1988•Cited by: 9•References: 22

The partisan preferences of Canadian Jews are compared with those of Catholics and Protestants using a sample of 218,738 electors obtained by merging 235 Gallup surveys from the period 1953–1983. The hypothesis guiding the analysis, that Jews are more likely to support left and centre parties (specifically the NDP and the Liberals), is derived from theories that seek to explain Jewish political inclinations. Controlling for the influence of educa…

Languages are territorial. They tend to occupy homogeneous, well bounded areas. When they do not, they lessen their chances of survival, especially if they are languages of minority groups. Reaching beyond the usual sociological causes of this phenomenon, this article searches the neurophysiological and the psychological literature for explanation of the tendency of closed, equalitarian systems with a high density of communication to move toward …

We cannot easily avoid structuring our explanations of self and society as well as of in-groups and out-groups without recourse to the center-periphery archetype. The capital city of one's country is typically located in the center of Mercator maps, and subjects who locate the self at the center of a symbolic space give a more rapid interpretation of that symbolic system than subjects not locating the self in the center. These 'central' tendencie…
