Women's Euro 2005 a ‘watershed’ for women's football in England and a new era for the game
The UEFA Women's Euro 2005 Championship hosted in England can be seen as a significant event in the development of football for women, being the largest female, international tournament held in the UK up to that date. However, despite record crowds and unprecedented media attention, an increase in participation by women after the event was neither significant, nor sustained in the hosting region or nationally. As identified in Parliamentary commi…
Embracing the games? Leverage and legacy of London 2012 Olympics at the sub-regional level by means of strategic partnerships
The ability to leverage benefits and establish a legacy from hosting mega-events continues to be of significant interest from both academic and policy perspectives. However, relatively few studies have focused on leverage and legacy by cities and regions that are not hosting mega-events. This research adds to the evidence base by examining the effectiveness of a sub-regional multi-agency strategic planning process in leveraging benefits from a me…

Climate and the History of Egypt
The first major section of this paper (p. 226f) surveys evidence bearing on the level of the Nile during the Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period, 1991 to ca. 1570 B.C. With the exception of the analysis of the range of a "good flood" in the reign of Senwosret I, most of the evidence comes from excavations stimulated by the building of the High Dam at Aswan, from nowflooded sites in Nubia, and from the inscriptions on the cliffs at t…
The Dark Ages in Ancient History. I. The First Dark Age in Egypt
The Oldest Records of the Nile Floods
Because rainfall over all but the northern Delta has long been rare and irregular, Egyptian farmers have depended for at least some 5000 years upon the annual flood of the Nile River to water their fields and prepare the soil for culti? vation. The amount of any particular inundation?at least before the building of the modern system of dams and barrages?determined whether that year would bring plenty or famine or something intermediate. These ann…
