  • Bone and Ball Bags

    Open Access•Dyfri Williams•ARTICLE•Pallas•2022•References: 18

This article argues that 5th century BC Athenian vases show that the construction and contents of two medium-sized bags are distinct: phormiskoi were stiff, tightly woven bags that held knucklebones (astragaloi), whereas a second type, the name of which is not preserved, but might have been diktydia, were of flexible open net-like make and held small balls. The visual contexts for both types of bags are examined and are found to reinforce the dis…

This article reexamines the dispersed contents of a number of tombs, in particular the so-called Brygos Tomb, discovered in the 19th century at Capua in Campania. In so doing, it also comments on some of the personalities involved in the discovery and dispersal, especially Alessandro Castellani and Wolfgang Helbig, and on their activities in the antiquities market, including the sale of the so-called Pennelli Sarcophagus to the British Museum. Th…

  • Sprang Hair Nets

Ian Jenkins, Dyfri Williams•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1985•Cited by: 1

Since the beginning of this century it has been recognized that the small textile hand-frames shown on Greek vases were probably used for the production of sprang. This view was recently endorsed by L. Clark in "Notes on Small Textile Frames Pictured on Greek Vases," AJA 87 (1983) 91-96. So far only representations of a forked frame have been discussed. The British Museum, however, possesses a pyxis lid on which is clearly shown a rectangular dev…
