Roman original or deliberate fake
A private collection in Cordoba contains a previously unpublished bronze head. It is not a Roman original. Its iconographic incongruences and its intentional fractures suggest a malicious intention in its manufacture. It is possibly a fake that someone intended to introduce in the art market. A second bronze portrait of the same personage belongs to a private collection in Murcia. It has similarly never been made known. It is also a modern sculpt…
Centurion
A Roman bust in the Knole collection (Kent, United Kingdom) was sold by Thomas Jenkins to John Frederick Sackville, Third Duke of Dorset, in Rome in 1771. Researchers who studied the bust since the end of the 19th century were unanimous in their opinion: it was a modern sculpture. However, the present study is able to refute that hypothesis, demonstrating that the bust was sculpted in a workshop in Rome in the second quarter of the third century …
On an Unusual Female Head from Italica (Santiponce, Seville)
A previously unpublished female head, which decorated the residential area of the Hadrianic extension of Italica, was found in excavations carried out by A. Parladé in 1929/1930 in the proximity of the House of the Neptune Mosaic. Its most particular characteristic is that the upper part was formed by a separately worked segment of hair. This head is the first to be documented in Hispania made with this technique, in which a tenon is located in t…
Fragments of Roman Sculptures from Hadrian's Villa
This article focuses on 12 fragments of Roman sculptures preserved in the storage rooms of Hadrian's villa in Tivoli. Ten can be identified as portraits of Hadrian, Antinous, Commodus, Caracalla, and possibly Elagabalus. Another is a head with a ringlet hairpiece (Löckchentoupet), which could represent a female member of Hadrian's family or a servant. The 12th fragment is identified as the only known replica of a head that is in the Louvre, and t…
Clinical and Experimental Factors Influencing the Efficacy of Neurofeedback in ADHD
Meta-analyses have been extensively used to evaluate the efficacy of neurofeedback (NFB) treatment for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents. However, each meta-analysis published in the past decade has contradicted the methods and results from the previous one, thus making it difficult to determine a consensus of opinion on the effectiveness of NFB. This works brings continuity to the field by extending and …
A bronze portrait of a slave child from a presumed villa near Medellín (Lusitania)
A bronze portrait of a child (figs. 1-4) belonging to the category of “small format” portraits is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz (inv. no. 4471). It was found in 1970 in excavations conducted by J. M. Peralta y Sosa on a farm in the Vega del Ortiga, an area east of Medellín in the territory between that town and Don Benito (Lusitania), some 35 km from Mérida ( Augusta Emerita ). In the excavated area of 40 m 2 (fig. 5) were two…
