The Agora: Public Life and Administration
The public, official life of Athens took place mostly in the central square, known as the Agora, described by ancient authors, especially Pausanias, and excavated by the American School of Classical Studies. This chapter explores the buildings that housed the executive (Royal Stoa), legislative (Bouleuterion), and judiciary (law courts, or diskasteria ) branches of the Athenian democracy.
The Archaeology of Athens
The monuments of ancient Athens and Attica give eloquent testimony to the enduring legacy of Greek civilization. In this book, a leading authority on the archaeology of this area presents a survey of the monuments first chronologically and then site by site creating the definitive work on the subject. John M. Camp begins with a comprehensive narrative history of the monuments from the earliest times to the sixth century A.D. Drawing on literary a…
The Phokian City of Panopeus/Phanoteus, Three New Rupestral Inscriptions, and the Cippus of the Labyadai of Delphi
Three unpublished rupestral inscriptions from the Phokian town of Panopeus/Phanoteus are presented here. Number 1 is a Late Archaic text concerning the distribution of parts of sacrificial animals as established by the legendary Phanotos (eponym of the town) for his daughter, Boupyga. Of special interest, this text is the original of a copy set up by the Labyadai in ca. 400–350 B.C.E. at Delphi, where it was found during the French excavations be…
Ilissos
The Ilissos River flows along the foothills of Mount Hymettos, to the southeast of Athens, outside the ancient walls.
Kephisos
The Kephissos river runs through the central part of the Attic plain, north of Athens, and seems to have played little part in the daily life of the city. It rises in the foothills of Mount Parnes and Mount Pentele and flows for 27 km, reaching the sea at Phaleron. The abundant springs at Kephalari, near the deme of Kephissia, are presumably one of several sources. The river is mentioned by Sophocles ( OC 585). The Sacred Way to Eleusis crossed o…

The Athenian citizen: Democracy in the Athenian Agora
The artefacts and monuments of the Athenian Agora provide our best evidence for the workings of ancient democracy. As a concise introduction to these physical traces, this book has been a bestseller since it was first published almost 20 years ago. Showing how central tribal identity was to all aspects of civic life, the text guides the reader through the duties of citizenship - as soldier in times of war and as juror during the peace. The checks…

Gods and heroes in the Athenian Agora
Religion played a part in almost every aspect of civic life, so shrines, temples, altars, and dedications are conspicuous at almost every turn during a visit to the Athenian Agora. The author of this booklet shows where and how the major Olympian gods were worshipped, and then turns his attention to lesser known deities, such as Hekate, the triple-bodied goddess of the crossroads. He argues that the cults of heroes, such as Theseus, one of the le…
