  • Ostorius Scapula, Publius

    Open Access•R S O Tomlin•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

As Publius Ostorius Scapula (date of birth unknown, but he died in 52 CE , probably aged about fifty) was presumably the son of the like‐named Perfect of Egypt, he must have enjoyed high favor in pursuing a senatorial career, which would have included the command of a legion, but only his last post is known, as the second governor of Roman Britain (47–52).

  • Brigantia

    Open Access•R S O Tomlin•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Romano‐British goddess who personified the Brigantes, the largest tribe in Roman Britain, which, according to Ptolemy, extended ”from sea to sea” (Geog . 2.3.10) – across the Pennines and most of northern England. Appropriately the name derives from Celtic *frng‐(”high”), like that of the Irish saint Brigit, who may have once been a cognate deity. The only representation is the stone figure from Birrens (Dumfriesshire) (CSIR I.4, No. 12= RIB 2091…

De rebus bellicis (“On Military Matters”) is the inadequate title given to a late Roman illustrated treatise preserved with the Notitia Dignitatum and other works of reference in the lost Codex Spirensis , a manuscript of the late ninth to early tenth century which survives in five copies of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

  • Emptio Bovis Frisica: The ‘Frisian Ox Sale’ Reconsidered

    Open Access•Alan K Bowman, R S O Tomlin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•2009•Cited by: 1

The article offers a re-edition of a Latin stilus tablet found in 1917 at Tolsum in the Netherlands, the region inhabited in Roman times by the tribe of the Frisii, and first published as a contract of sale for an ox. The re-edition, with readings based on new techniques of digital image capture, establishes the date of the text (A.D. 29) and shows that it does not concern the sale of an ox, but is more probably the second half of a loan-note for…

    R S O Tomlin•REVIEW•Phoenix•1980

This portrayal of one of antiquity's most enigmatic figures offers a vivid and compact assessment of the Apostate's life and reign. Proceeding directly from an evaluation of the ancient sources--the testimony of friends and enemies of Julian as well as the writings of the emperor himself--the author traces Julian's youth, his years as the commander of the Roman forces in Gaul, and his emergence as sole ruler in the course of a dramatic march to C…
