Thematic analyses of interviews suggested that teachers created opportunities to model and …

Islam, Peacebuilding and Development
As this special issue of JPD was being finalised, the world was anxiously watching the popular uprisings unfolding across the Middle East and North Africa. The editorial staff considered delaying this special issue to include new articles analysing the events, but the changes were occurring too quickly for a refereed journal to keep pace. We knew our role would be a longer-term one, aimed at providing a space for readers to analyse and reflect on…
Human rights and building peace
An increasing number of local, national and international nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) are diligently working for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Muslim societies, and not without success. However, at times, some of these NGOs are perceived to be agents of ‘Western colonisation’ who attempt to undermine traditional structures and customs. Such attitudes are particularly prevalent in many Muslim countries such as Pakist…

Security for People? The Role of Security Sector Reform in Sustaining Peace
In this issue, our authors illustrate through international cases that there is much work to be done to ensure SSR meets this objective. Much of this has to do with the contexts within which SSR projects are being implemented – in some cases where conflict is not exactly ‘post’, and where underlying political realities that may have been root causes of conflict remain largely unresolved. It also, however, has to do with a proclivity of SSR design…

Education for Coexistence and Arab‐Jewish Encounters in Israel
The killing of thirteen Arabs by Israeli police forces in October 2000 points to the mounting tension and hostility between Arabs and Jews in Israel. Thus, it is essential that these encounters be examined and professionally developed to respond to the needs of t…

A Framework for Nonviolence and Peacebuilding in Islam
Today, there is little debate that a paradigm shift is occurring in the field of international conflict resolution; where experts laud the effectiveness of peaceful means ending disputes compared with the use of force or violence.
