Changes in relative wealth following an asthma diagnosis and asthma sta…

    Open Access•Patricia K Smith•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2005•Cited by: 12•References: 11

The Supreme Court has ruled that asking for money is a form of protected speech. However, it has also ruled that restrictions on the time, place, and manner of begging are constitutional. This paper examines 71 U.S. cities to determine what factors influence a city's propensity to enact anti-begging regulations. The logistic regression results indicate that cities with higher welfare benefits are less likely to regulate begging. Cities with highe…

  • Obesity and the Rate of Time Preference

Open Access•John Komlos, Patricia K Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2004

It is hypothesized that recent trends in US and worldwide obesity are, in part, related to an increase in the marginal rate of time preference, where time preference refers to the rate at which people are willing to trade current benefit for future benefit. The higher the rate of time preference, the larger is the factor by which individuals discount the future health risks associated with current consumption. Data from the United States, as well…

  • Childhood Welfare Receipt and the Implications of Welfare Reform

    Patricia K Smith, W J J Yeung et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The 1996 welfare legislation has generated significant debate about the likely consequences of welfare reform for children in disadvantaged families. We document patterns of childhood welfare receipt for children born between 1967 and 1975 and predict the level and composition of children likely to be affected by the new welfare law. We find that 40 percent of children who received Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) did so for more th…

The characteristics of the downwardly mobile do not dramatically differ between the two periods. The majority li…
