Piero Sraffa’s Internment on the Isle of Man in 1940 as a British ‘Enemy Alien’
On 10 June 1940, the Axis power of Italy declared war on Great Britain and France. Shortly thereafter the British government extended to Italians its policy of internment that had previously applied to Austrian and German nationals living within its borders. In this essay the authors present newly declassified documents from the British Home Office as well as previously unearthed correspondence by Keynes from the Wren Library that bring color to …
Professor Pasinetti and the Sraffa Papers
Luigi Lodovico Pasinetti’s relationship with Sraffa’s literary remains (the Sraffa Papers) is unique in that he has both written about and appears within the material. In terms of the former aspect of writing about the Sraffa archive, Pasinetti was among the first Sraffa scholars to reproduce and analyse as early as 2001 important quotations from the Sraffa Papers that indicate Sraffa’s intellectual project, or ‘grand research programme.’ In term…
Patterns of emotion-network dynamics are orthogonal to mood disorder status
Individuals differ markedly in how they experience the ebb and flow of emotions. In this study, we used daily experience sampling to examine whether these differences reflect the nature and presence of mood disorders or whether they can better be characterized as distinct dynamic emotion profiles that cut-across diagnostic boundaries. We followed 105 individuals in 2019-2020 with diagnoses of major depression, remitted major depression, bipolar d…
Towards a New Understanding of Sraffa

C.E. Ferguson and the Neoclassical Theory of Capital
In 1969 the American neoclassical economist C.E. Ferguson wrote that reliance on neoclassical aggregate production and distribution theory is a 'matter of faith' to be sorted out (he says 'answered') by econometricians. Ferguson was criticized on both sides of the debate for invoking this religious metaphor. Using the methodological framework of A.J. Cohen & G.C. Harcourt (2005), Introduction: capital theory controversy: scarcity, production, equ…
A Simple Model of the Surplus Approach to Value, Distribution, and Growth
The surplus approach to value and distribution represents an older and in this author's opinion much more relevant way to model capitalistic socio-economic systems than the mainstream neoclassical approach. This essay develops the analytical structure of the surplus approach by tracing its origins to the groundbreaking work of the circular flow concept in the Physiocrats and Quesnay's Tableau Economique, the Classical economists, Marx, and Piero …

Exiting the Cleanroom
Over the past decade and a half, corporations and academies have invested considerable time and money in the realization of ubiquitous computing. Yet design approaches that yield ecologically valid understandings of ubiquitous computing systems, which can help designers make design decisions based on how Scott Carter is a research scientist at FX Palo Alto Laboratory; his work focuses on tool support for early-stage experimentation with ubiquitou…
Defining, Designing, and Evaluating Peripheral Displays
Peripheral displays are an important class of ubiquitous computing applications. However, the field has suffered from a lack of clear, consistent terminology surrounding peripheral display research. We present an Activity Theory analysis of peripheral displays in order to establish common terminology and meaning for peripheral displays. We also present an Activity Theory-based approach for designing and evaluating peripheral displays
Reconsidering the Effects of Sibling Configuration
Until recently, social scientists were headed to consensus over the impact of the structural parameters of the sibling group, especially size and birth order, on educational and other status outcomes. New developments challenge this conventional wisdom, thus offering an opening for dialogue on this topic. We identify the utility and implications of studying the consequences of sibling configuration within sociology, across disciplines, and for pu…
Abundance, diversity, and patterns of distribution of primates on the Tapiche River in Amazonian Peru
This work presents data on the relative diversity, abundance, and distribution patterns of primates in a 20 km 2 area of the Tapiche River in the Peruvian Amazon. Population data were collected while the study area was both inundated and dry (March to September 1997) using conventional line‐transect census techniques. Survey results reflected the presence of 11 primate species, but population parameters on only eight of the species will be presen…
Stability and Correlates of the California Verbal Learning Test for a Sample of Normal Elderly Persons
The test-retest stability of the California Verbal Learning Test was examined for a normal elderly sample of 28 men and 74 women along with the correlation for total recall with scores on selected variables. Mean age was 72 yr. The test was re-administered after one year. Mean total recall did not change; the stability coefficient was .64. Coefficients for the other scores ranged considerably (.27 for recognition hits to .62 for perseverations) a…
