  • New light on Adam Smith’s view of taxation via the concept of equity

Kwangsu Kim•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2026

This paper aims to defend Adam Smith’s ideas of taxation via moral philosophical approaches. In the conventional interpretation such a view is assumed to be inconsistent particularly due to the shortcomings of his economic theory. We suggest that via his notions of justice and equity, and of surplus income counted on an equilibrium basis in his natural price system, his argument for proportional taxation is rather coherent, while considerations f…

  • The Mechanism behind Understanding Anaphoric One and Noun Phrase Ellipsis: How Language Models Work

Open Access•Nayoun Kim, JinYeong Bak et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2026

This study examines how language models access and recover linguistic information associated with the correct antecedents of two types of anaphoric elements: Anaphoric one and Noun Phrase Ellipsis (NPE), both of which require antecedent resolution for proper interpretation. In this study, we created manually annotated datasets (collectively referred to as AO-NPE datasets) from English Wikipedia, containing annotated instances of Anaphoric one and…

  • Resolving a seeming paradox in Adam Smith’s study of history with regard to inference to the best explanation

Kwangsu Kim•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2022

This paper aims to resolve a seeming paradox in Adam Smith’s study of history with regard to inference to the best explanation. In the Wealth of Nations Smith argued the priority of “natural progress” over the model of historical progress as evidenced by many contemporary historians. These two competing exercises in philosophical history raise the previously unexplored question of what are critical tests to justify which model is the best, with S…

  • Philosophy and science in Adam Smith’s ‘History of Astronomy’: A metaphysico-scientific view

    Open Access•Kwangsu Kim•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2017•References: 16

This article casts light on the intimate relationship between metaphysics and science in Adam Smith’s thought. Understanding this relationship can help in resolving an enduring dispute or misreading concerning the status and role of natural theology and the ‘invisible hand’ doctrine. In Smith’s scientific realism, ontological issues are necessary prerequisites for scientific inquiry, and metaphysical ideas thus play an organizing and regulatory r…

    Open Access•Kwangsu Kim•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 27

This article aims to point out Adam Smith's and Douglass North's multidisciplinary approach to economic development and history. In terms of the use of comprehensive and integrated models of society, politics, and economy, they presented that economic development re…

  • Adam Smith: Natural Theology and Its Implications for His Method of Social Inquiry

    Kwangsu Kim•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•1997•References: 17

This paper sees a systematic unity between Smith's theological view and scientific study of society. Smith's theological outlook as to a benevolent deity is grasped as a metaphysical doctrine in his system of social science. It arises from the fact that while Smith's opinion concerning God's attributes is established, in the first instance, on the basis of his empirical study of nature, it also stands irrespective of other facts which are not in …

  • The Influence of Cultural Individualism-Collectivism, Self Construals, and Individual Values on Communication Styles Across Cultures

    Open Access•William B Gudykunst, Yuko Matsumoto et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1996•Cited by: 199•References: 46

Individualism-collectivism has a direct effect on communication styles and an indirect effect that is mediated through self construals and values. It was hypothesized that cultural individualism-collectivism, self construals, and values would have separate effects on individuals'use of low- and high-context communication styles. As predicted, the results of this study suggest that independent self construals and individualistic values mediate the…
