    Vytautas Kavolis•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1977

The most comprehensive concept for analyzing major sociocultural alternatives that have actually existed in particular spheres of social life is the sphere-of-life culture. While political cultures have been widely studied, sociologists have not given much attention to the comparative study of moral cultures. A moral culture is a particular constellation of ideas and feelings pertaining to the basic responsibilities and limitations of human being…

    Vytautas Kavolis•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1970•Cited by: 6•References: 14

The most important social trends of the contemporary period are interpreted as giving rise to a polarization between two types of culture and personality: the “modernistic” and the “underground.” Evidence for the two types is drawn from cultural products (mainly literature and the visual arts), psychiatric observations, and accounts of emerging modes of behavior among the youth. A psychological mechanism for this dualistic impact of social trends…

    Vytautas Kavolis•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1966•Cited by: 5

A comparison of historical fluctuations in artistic creativity with several kinds of data on processes of community integration suggests that: (a) the social utility of art is increased during periods of high salience of integrative problems in the community system; and (b) high-quality art can be created only when adequate social resources (wealth, power, evaluative symbolism and cathectic interest) are allocated to artistic action. Artistic eff…

    Vytautas Kavolis•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1964•Cited by: 2

A survey of economic correlates of historical fluctuations in artistic creativity suggests two generalizations. First, the motivation for artistic creativity is maximized by a balanced tension between the needs for achievement and for expression in the personality system. This type of motivation is most likely to be produced in relatively early stages of increasing prosperity. Second, social demand for art tends to be stimulated, in a minor mode,…

  • Art Content and Economic Reality

    Open Access•Vytautas Kavolis•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1965

As a partial test of the Marxist sociology of art, selected evidence on the relationship between economic conditions and art content in a wide range of cultures is analyzed. The analysis reveals that (a) economic conditions are reflected in some kinds of art content, but (b) the main determinants of the reflection of economic conditions in art content seem to be emotional involvements (positive or negative) with aspects or objects of the economy
