  • The effect of the analyst's gender and other factors on post‐termnation patient‐analyst contact

    Open Access•Joseph Schachter, Lee Brauer•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This questionnaire study was designed to confirm and further explore an earlier finding of a gender difference in post-termination patient-analyst contact, as well as to assess whether practices regarding post-termination contact have changed in the five-year interval since the first study. The hypothesis that women analysts are more likely to have post-termination contact with their analysands than men analysts was confirmed by the present study…

    Open Access•Joseph Schachter•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1990

This is a report of a followup study to determine whether attending a panel discussion group on post-termination patient-analyst contact influenced the analytic audience's attitude on that subject. A questionnaire about post-termination contact was given to 21 analysts who did not attend the discussion group and to 45 analysts before they attended. The same questionnaire was given again to both groups six months later. Responses by the 21 analyst…

  • Concurrent Individual and Individual-In-A-Group Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

    Open Access•Joseph Schachter•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1988•References: 32

This paperapos;s thesis is that concurrent individual-in-a-group and individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy can be conducted in conformance with psychoanalytic principles of treatment as well as can individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy alone. American psychoanalysts have shown little interest in group psychotherapy, probably because of earlier criticism that transference is diluted by the greater reality of the therapist in group psychotherap…

  • Selection and outcome in in‐patient psychotherapy

Open Access•John Denford, Joseph Schachter et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1983

In a retrospective study of 28 successive admissions for in‐patient psychotherapy, the following characteristics have been identified as predictors of favourable outcome: a diagnosis of neurotic psychopathology; superior intelligence; considerable depression; and minimal previous out‐patient treatment. Two alternative sets of decision rules are presented which might be used as a guide in deciding whether to admit patients. More rigorous selection…

  • Intraindividual variability in human figure drawings

Judith A Rubin, Joseph Schachter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1983•References: 43

An investigation was conducted with a normal population, in which 180 children drew "a person" four times under identical conditions. Three types of variability were assessed: score, content, and visual. A cyclical pattern was found in all three areas, with significant correlations between visual variability and score and content variabilities

  • Neighborhood Quality and Climate as Factors in U.S. Net Migration Patterns, 1974–76

    Open Access•Joseph Schachter, Paul G Althaus•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1982•Cited by: 4

A bstract . Two determinants of net migration into Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas in 1974–76 are established. First, using objective indices of the quality of neighborhoods (NQL), such as crime rates , earlier research failed to find a significant relation between NQL and migration. Using OLS regressions, we find that variations in perceived NQL have a significant effect on net migration. Our measure of perceived NQL is based on newly av…

  • Newborn Heart Rate and Blood Pressure

Joseph Schachter, John M Lachin et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1976

The effect of race and of socioeconomic class upon heart rate and systolic blood pressure distributions was examined in 247 full-term, appropriate birth weight newborns. For each newborn, heart rate and blood pressure measurements obtained during all of the non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) periods of sleep in a single test session were each averaged. Heart rate was significantly faster in black newborns than in white newborns, and this racial differ…

  • Phasic Heart Rate Responses

Joseph Schachter, Joyce L Kerr et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1975

Click stimuli were presented during sleep to newborns from a low socioeconomic class urban population in Northeastern United States. Eighty-three black newborns showed less immediate poststimulus deceleration than did 67 white newborns. This difference was independent of heart rate level, and could not be accounted for by any of the perinatal variables studied, including birthweight and gestational age. These results suggest that in this populati…

  • Heart Rate Levels of Black and White Newborns

Joseph Schachter, Joyce L Kerr et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1974

Among a low socioeconomic class urban population in northeastern United States, black newborns had higher heart rate levels during sleep than white newborns. This difference could be accounted for by none of the perinatal variables studied including proportion of rapid-eye-movement sleep, degree of motor activity, amount of crying, birth weight or gestational age. The speculative possibility that the elevated heart rate in these black newborns is…

  • Net immigration of gainful workers into the united states, 1870–1930

    Open Access•Joseph Schachter•ARTICLE•Demography•1972•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper presents a socioeconomic occupational grouping of the foreign-born gainful workers of the United States at each census from 1870 through 1930. This series is then used to estimate the net immigration of gainful workers into the United States during each of the six decades from 1870 to 1930 cross classified by occupational group and sex. The following three conclusions are then drawn from the above two series. First, the socioeconomic p…

  • Ease of conception in mothers of twins

    Gordon Allen, Joseph Schachter•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1971•Cited by: 2

A relationship between fecundability and dizygotic twinning is discussed. 2 kinds of data suggest an association between high fecundability and twinning. First twinning is elevated among conceptions occurring in the first 3 months. In 1 study it was shown that for conception that occurred in the first 3 months of marriage twins exceeded expectation by 19%. Secondly the twinning rate is higher in premarital and illegitimate conceptions. It is note…

    Joseph Schachter•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1957

Physiological Specificity of Emotional Behavior In acute fear 35 of the 48 subjects had a predominantly epinephrine-like response. During the pain of the cold pressor test, 31 of the 47 subjects had a predominantly norepinephrine-like reaction. In anger 19 showed a norepinephrine-like effect, 22 showed an epinephrine-like effect, and 7 had mixed effects. Different psychological intensities of anger tend to be associated with different physiologic…

  • Spontaneous Autonomic Activity, Anxiety, and “Hyperkinetic Impulsivity”

Thomas A Williams, Joseph Schachter et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1965

In a psychophysiologic study of the relationships between spontaneous resting cardiac and sudomotor activity, visual-motor performance, and ratings of “emotional” and “behavioral impulsivity,” attempts to reproduce correlations originally reported by Lacey and Lacey1 were partially successful. Cardiac “labiles” tended to exhibit superior visual-motor performance. Sudomotor lability was not predictive of visual-motor performance, although skin res…
