Measurement of parental executive function in early childhood settings
A growing number of early childhood (EC) parenting programs target adult executive function (EF) to build responsive parenting behaviors and to promote positive child development. We hypothesized that one source of this variability is that dominance shifts with age from being associated with aggression to being more associated with prosocial behavior and sociometric status. To test this, we examined 10 vs. 13 year‐old boys' perceptions of dominance, using a measure that assessed the perceived outcomes of dyadic agonism. In a sample consisting p…

Looking Around to See Who I Am
What we apologize for as a failure to imagine and craft whole characters, rounded as we say, complex, changing, surprising characters on the scale of Tolstoy or George Eliot is, in Zola, Dreiser, Joyce or Dos Passos, neither a limit of psychological talent nor a theoretical limit of representation within the methods of Naturalism, but in fact a striking restatement of the of the self under new conditions. In this essay I wish to create a language…
The Future's Past
T HE LIFE OF THINGS is in reality many lives. A warrior's sword, known to him by its feel and balance, by its sound as it cuts the air, known or seen by his community when the sight of the sword strapped on for battle is the sign-we go to war tomorrow. The sight of it is one of the signs of war, terror, possible defeat, and yet being his sword, a sign of the barrier still between themselves and defeat. His as property, but kept sharp and ready by…
