How ritual might create religion: A neuropsychological exploration
Several models of the evolution of religion claim that ritual creates “religion” and gives it a positive evolutionary role. Robert Bellah suggests that the evolutionary roots of ritual lay in the play of animals. For Homo sapiens, Bellah argues, rituals generate a world of experience different from the world of everyday life, and that different world of experience is the foundation of later religious developments. Robin Dunbar points to trance da…

An AgMIP framework for improved agricultural representation in integrated assessment models
Integrated assessment models (IAMs) hold great potential to assess how future agricultural systems will be shaped by socioeconomic development, technological innovation, and changing climate conditions. By coupling with climate and crop model emulators, IAMs have the potential to resolve important agricultural feedback loops and identify unintended consequences of socioeconomic development for agricultural systems. Here we propose a framework to …

Engineering solutions for food-energy-water systems: It is more than engineering
Food, energy, and water systems interact extensively, giving rise to the term “food-energy-water (FEW) nexus,” with the term “nexus” signifying connectedness and interrelationships. A systems approach involving multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams and partnerships is needed to address complex challenges of the nexus. A concurrent cyber-physical framework comprised of systems informatics, information analysis methods and tools, and system…
Assessing agricultural risks of climate change in the 21st century in a global gridded crop model intercomparison
Significance Agriculture is arguably the sector most affected by climate change, but assessments differ and are thus difficult to compare. We provide a globally consistent, protocol-based, multimodel climate change assessment for major crops with explicit characterization of uncertainty. Results with multimodel agreement indicate strong negative effects from climate change, especially at higher levels of warming and at low latitudes where develop…
Religion and Violence from a Psychological Perspective
This chapter summarizes some of the methods and findings in religion and violence from a psychological perspective, reviewing Stanley Milgram's obedience to authority and Philip Zimbardo's prison experiment. There are important differences between Milgrim's and Zimbardo's experimental conditions and contemporary campaigns of religious terrorism. The theory of the origins of violence by Heinz Kohut highlights the role of a person's sense of self a…

Cartoons and Aids: Safer Sex, HIV, and Aids in Ralf König's Comics
Ralf König is the best-selling author of comic book novels, and his stories of gay men coming to terms with contemporary society have resonated with hundreds of thousands of German readers and film-goers. König's characters, like the author himself, have great difficulty adhering to the demand that condoms be used. The article describes how König develops this theme through a variety of works from 1985 through 1999, and analyzes the intertwined r…
Land Use Change in Central Florida and Sensitivity Analysis Based on Agriculture to Urban Extreme Conversion
This paper explored recent land use and land cover change in western central Florida, examining both socioeconomic and biophysical influences on land transformation and the impacts of that change. Between 1995 and 2006, a growth in population resulted in the conversion of agricultural areas, grasslands, and upland forests to urban areas. Additionally, the amount of extractive land uses (e.g., mining) increased by 21.8%, water reservoirs by 19.9%,…
The Fundamentalist Mindset: Psychological Perspectives on Religion, Violence, and History
This book sheds light on the psychology of fundamentalism, with a particular focus on those who become extremists and fanatics. What accounts for the violence that emerges among some fundamentalist groups? The contributors to this book identify several factors: a radical dualism, in which all aspects of life are bluntly categorized as either good or evil; a destructive inclination to interpret authoritative texts, laws, and teachings in the most …

Chapter 3. Psychodynamic Theories of the Evolution of the God Image
This paper discusses the clinical, psychodynamic approach to understanding the internal God-image. Such an approach reveals the ways in which these internal images are rooted in and linked to the person's developmental history and their character and personality style. The works of Freud, Rizzuto (and its grounding in the theories of Fairbairn and Winnicott), Spero, and their utilization by other writers are discussed and evaluated in some detail…

Contemporary relational psychoanalytic theory provides new opportunities in the dialogue between psychology and religion. This article suggests three examples. First, by seeing the self as inherently interrelated and by underscoring the importance of experience, relational psychoanalysis creates the possibility of a more open attitude toward religious experience. Second, a relational understanding of human nature potentially contains new resource…

Bookburning and the Betrayal of German Intellectuals
ing which was staged in all university towns on May 10, 1933. Since the Nazi Party, professors, and students had collaborated closely in the preparation of this event, the betrayal of the intellectuals in their roles as humanists was fully revealed in the recent commemorations. The bookburnings formed a spectacular act on the public stage and were undertaken by a regime which relied on myths, symbols, representative art, and human stereotypes. It…
