  • Positivist or post-positivist philosophy of science? The left Vienna Circle and Thomas Kuhn

    Open Access•Joseph Bentley•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2024•References: 24

The debate between the revisionist and received views of the relationship between Thomas Kuhn and logical empiricism has until now focused on the relationship between Kuhn and Rudolf Carnap. Here, I consider the relationship between Kuhn and two other members of the Vienna Circle's left-wing; Otto Neurath and Philipp Frank. It is argued that the attribution of the historical turn in philosophy of science to Kuhn obscures the historical awareness …

    Open Access•Joseph Bentley•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Otto Neurath's role in the so-called protocol sentence debates is typically framed as primarily an epistemologically radical rejection of empiricist foundationalism. However, less well recognized is that from this debate, Neurath emerges with a conception of protocol statements that functions as a radical reconceptualization of evidence. Whilst recognizably still empiricist, Neurath's conception of evidence breaks with many of the key assumptions…

  • "Reading "The Waste Land

Tim Redman, Jewel Spears Brooker et al.•ARTICLE•American Literature•1991

This book offers fresh commentary on T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, a book of modernist poetry published in 1922. It aims to be both a part-by-part analysis of the poem with periodic summations and a meditation on the limits of interpretation and the problematic nature of reading in the late 20th century. Bringing both Eliot's philosophical writings and contemporary theory to their interpretation, the authors aim to demonstrate that in his early es…

  • Personal Satisfaction as a Criterion for Evaluating Group Success

    Open Access•Steven S Dejulio, Michael J Lambert et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Results of combined data for six encounter groups (containing a total of 37 male and 25 female college students) suggested no significant relationship between personal satisfaction and peers' evaluations of interpersonal effectiveness. Within individual groups, however, significant relationships did occur, suggesting that intra-group differences were more powerful than the over-all relationship between the two variables. Implications for group re…
