  • A History of Ashes

Open Access•Raymond Orr, Darren Calhoun et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

The consequences of starting smoking by age 18 are significant. Early smoking initiation is associated with higher tobacco dependence, increased difficulty in smoking cessation and more negative health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine how closely smoking initiation in a well-defined population of American Indians (AI) resembles a group of Non-Hispanic white (NHW) populations born over an 80 year period. We obtained data on age of…

  • Religiosity and Spiritual Engagement in Two American Indian Populations

Open Access•Eva Marie Garroutte, Janette Beals et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 34

Social scientific investigation into the religiospiritual characteristics of American Indians rarely includes analysis of quantitative data. After reviewing information from ethnographic and autobiographical sources, we present analyses of data from a large, population-based sample of two tribes (n = 3,084). We examine salience of belief in three traditions: aboriginal, Christian, and Native American Church. We then investigate patterns in sociod…

  • Race, Class and the Allocation of Public Housing in Britain

    Open Access•Jeff Henderson, Valerie Karn et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1984•Cited by: 30•References: 8

This article uses data from surveys of public housing applicants and tenants and from an ethnographic study of the procedures of a major British housing authority to explain the reasons for racially discriminatory housing allocations. It shows how central judgments of 'respectability' are to the allocation processes of housing departments, even when, officially, allocations are based on a system of 'housing need'. We trace how class and racial fa…

  • The Avenues of Mundane Salvation

    Jeff Henderson•ARTICLE•American Literature•1983

INCE the publication of John Gardner's treatise On Moral Fiction 3 (1978), it has become virtually impossible to offer criticism of his work without some recourse to both his general thesis that art seeks that which is good-i.e., that which nurtures and affirms life rather than that which debases and destroys-and his specific definition of a book as that, for its time, is wise, sane, and magical, one that clarifies life and tends to improve it.1 …

  • Capital and the Work Ethic

    Robin Cohen, Jeff Henderson•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1979•Cited by: 3

In emphasizing the problem of "habituation" as a central and continuing problem for capital, Harry Braverman, in Labor and Monopoly Capital, has opened an important debate, only partly entered into by Marx himself. While Marx's central project in Capital was to analyze the ways in which competitive capitalism was able to reproduce the means of production fundamental to its epoch, the concomitant problem of reproducing the relations of production …

  • The Practice of Racial Dispersal in Birmingham, 1969-1975

Open Access•Hazel Flett, Jeff Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•1979•Cited by: 5

The possibility of using public sector housing to disperse black people across our cities in the interest of racial integration is again attracting attention. Based on an analysis of housing department records, this article examines the effects on Birmingham's black settlers of the operation of one particular policy of racial dispersal. Having described the events leading to the introduction and ultimately the termination of the policy, the artic…
