Identifying network state-based Parkinson’s disease subtypes using clustering and support vector machine models
Our findings suggest that, while PD is generally associated with a larger DAT deficit in specific brain structures of the neostriatum, it exhibits intrinsic heterogeneity across individuals, which may stem from genetic factors. Such heterogeneity can be characterized by ML models and optimally mapped into network states, providing new insights to consider when developing personalized drugs
Human immunodeficiency virus accelerates brain aging and disrupts the trajectory of glymphatic clearance in aging brain
These findings suggest that HIV infection accelerates brain aging and disrupts the trajectory of glymphatic clearance in aging brain, which may explain the complex mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment in motor and executive domains often seen in HIV patients. These new insights may shift our understanding of HIV pathology and aid the development of new therapeutic targets, contrary to previous approaches
Acceptance of Biological Evolution by First-Year Life Sciences University Students
Lack of acceptance of biological evolution, despite the overwhelming evidence that supports it, can be very problematic in higher education courses that have a strong biological basis. We investigated acceptance of biological evolution in 344 first-year Life Sciences undergraduate students across five programmes at the University of Roehampton, UK. In line with previous findings in British universities, we found that 9% of the students did not ac…
Foraging with finesse: A hard‐fruit‐eating primate selects the weakest areas as bite sites
OBJECTIVES: Fruit husks are rarely uniformly hard, varying in penetrability via sulci and changes in thickness. We tested whether a hard-food specialist primate i) bites randomly on food fruit husk surfaces to access seeds, or ii) selects areas most easily penetrated by canines. We consider this would occur so as to minimize deployed mechanical force, energetic expenditure and risk of dental breakage when feeding. METHODS: A sulcus is the natural…

The Syllabus is Dead, Long Live the Syllabus: Thoughts on the State of Language Curriculum, Content, Language, Tasks, Projects, Materials, Wikis, Blogs and the World Wide Web
In the 1990s, second and foreign language education entered the so-called post-method condition, marking the end of the search for a global pedagogy applicable to all learning contexts. Just as language pedagogy - the design and implementation of learning tasks - became flexible and localised, so have corresponding curricular concepts and procedures followed suit, leading to the beginning of a post-syllabus condition. Supported by developments in…
Evolutionary changes in the masticatory complex following the transition to farming in the southern Levant
A post‐Pleistocene reduction trend in the dimensions of the masticatory complex followed the transition to agricultural lifestyle in several world regions. A major limitation of previous studies is large temporal gaps between the analyzed skeletal populations, which do not allow the detection and analysis of a diachronic morphological transition. In this work, we analyze a large number of specimens from the southern Levant, where agriculture firs…
Morbidity, rickets and long-bone growth in post-medieval Britain—a cross-population analysis
Socio-economic status, rather than urbanization, industrialization or rickets, was the central factor behind the observed differences in growth among the post-medieval populations. The observed inter-population growth variations were only significant during infancy
Cross-population analysis of the growth of long bones and the os coxae of three Early Medieval Austrian populations
Inter-population variability in long-bone and pelvic-bone growth during the Early Medieval period is examined. The materials comprise four archaeological populations: two Slavonic (Gars-Thunau, Zwentendorf, Austria, 10th-century AD), one Avar (Zwölfaxing, Austria, 8th-century AD), and one Anglo-Saxon (Raunds, England, 10th-century AD). Bone measurements are analyzed against dental age estimates in order to assess inter-population differences in g…
Portfolios, Power, and Ethics
Portfolios have been used in a variety of ways for assessing student work. In education, generally, and more specifically in second language education, portfolios have been associated with alternative assessment (Darling-Hammond, 1994; Hamayan, 1995; Shohamy, 1996; Wolf, Bixby, Glenn, & Gardener, 1991). This article defines alternative assessment as representing a paradigm and culture that is different from traditional testing, requiring a differ…

Recovering American Literature
Considering the treatment meted out to the great classics of American literature by Hawthorne, Melville, Mark Twain, and Henry James, Shaw shows convincingly how they have been systematically raided by academic critics in the service of political correctness, and virtually robbed of their deepest meaning. This book demonstrates that it is possible to read literature and be highly conscious of the political, without descending into the merely ideo…
