Introduction to the Correspondence of Robert Duncan and Norman O. Brown
The following selections from letters exchanged between Robert Duncan and Norman O. Brown display the range and interest of their extensive correspondence. The correspondence was generative for both figures, and shows a degree of mutual affection and personal concern beyond their intellectual interests. The letters are retrieved from the special collections libraries at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the University of Buffalo
Voting in Clientelistic Social Networks
In clientelistic environments, voters want to know which politicians are most likely to deliver on targeted benefits. We argue that in these contexts, voters use their social proximity with candidates as heuristics to inform vote choice. To test our theory, we rely on local naming conventions to reconstruct family networks spanning one whole city in the Philippines and assess blood and marriage links between voters and local candidates. We then c…
The Double Agent
This essay explores the close relationship between the poet Robert Duncan and Norman O. Brown. Their long friendship and shared intellectual interests were generative for both, allowing Brown at one point to remark that the “poetry of Robert Duncan had made the writing of Love's Body possible.” Duncan responded in kind by featuring Brown in “Santa Cruz Propositions,” written while the poet was in residence at the University of California, Santa C…
Siting Sound
If, as Jacques Rancière says, the politics of the aesthetic inheres in the distribution of the sensible, the work of sound artist Christine Sun Kim embodies this fact as an issue specific to disability and deafness. Her drawings and sound installations make visible and tactile sounds that as a deaf person from birth she can’t hear but that, at the same time, enable her listeners to hear through a deaf optic. As such her work not only distributes …

Locating Emerging Media
Videogames were one of the earliest ways in which consumers came into contact with digital media. Typically, game history has been told from a North American or Japanese perspective. Central debates have been concerned with what “great men” did (e.g., Ralph Baer and Nolan Bushnell), while a range of foundational stories and markers (the shortage of 100yen coins following the Japanese release of “Space Invaders,” the dumping of “E.T.” cartridges i…

On the Outskirts of Form
In Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu's 2006 film, Babel, the historical geography of globalization is presented through a series of interlinked stories about a crisis of communication among widely dispersed individuals.3 A Japanese businessman gives a rifle to a Moroccan herdsman who has served as the former's guide on a hunting expedition in northern Africa. The herdsman gives the gun to his two sons so that they can ward off jackals that are preying …

Ghostlier Demarcations
Why do modern poets quote from dictionaries in their poems? How has the tape recorder changed the poet's voice? What has shopping to do with Gertrude Stein's aesthetics? These and other questions form the core of Ghostlier Demarcations, a study of modern poetry as a material medium. One of today's most respected critics of twentieth-century poetry and poetics, Michael Davidson argues that literary materiality has been dominated by an ideology of …

A Reading of Thirty Things
After the daily calendar of Day Book and given a deliberate format in Robert Indiana's design for the cover, we might go on in the new work to read thirty as the number of days in a given month. And there is the feel of days going by in these poems even better, the feel of the calendar sheets tearing off and blowing away as in the conventional motion picture language. A wind/ blows steadily/ as we sit in an imaginary film would turn the calendar …
Archeologist of Morning
Charles Olson's inaugural remarks on literature accompany his first thoughts on history. Call Me Ishmael, the poet's 1947 book on Melville, is a sustained meditation on space the ''central fact to man born in America.1 Moby Dick chronicles the misuse of this space through mercantilism and industry viewed through North Atlantic whaling. are the last 'first' people, Olson says; forget that. We act big, misuse our land, ourselves. We lose our own pr…
To Eliminate the Draw
W 7 HEN Charles Olson set out to delineate texts and contexts about America for his Black Mountain student, Edward Dorn, he emphasized those works which invert the traditional terms for personal, spiritual, and political life. Rather than study the purely physical Olson proposed a study of the human universe, stressing that for any historical study, is not how much one knows but in what field of context it is retained, and used.1 Obviously the Bi…
