Trash Trout Motion Picture Show
The Trash Trout Motion Picture Show is an experience, not just a film. It is a live performance that weaves music, dance, and the projection of an experimental, handmade film created from trash taken from the New River in western North Carolina. It is a crowdsourced creative project that features contributions from community members and staff from Watauga Riverkeeper and New River Conservancy, two local nonprofits that advocate for the health of …
Digital Watauga
For centuries, an archive was the physical place where documents, artifacts, and other historical items were stored and where researchers and historians could reach back into the past to study the people, events, and records of our history. The archive was a location with an address and a room number—a place to visit in order to sift through the remnants of the past. The digital age has created new opportunities for archivists, historians, and the…
Between Paranoia and Creativity
There is widespread concern regarding various aspects of psychoanalytic education. A recent paper by Patrick Casement, drawn widely from his long experience as a supervisor both in the U.K. and abroad, implied that the British Psychoanalytical Society is not exempt from these concerns. To investigate this, a semistructured, anonymous questionnaire was devised and sent to all candidates and all recently qualified analysts at the society. Overall t…
Psychoanalytic Group Therapy in an NHS Psychotherapy Department
In this article we compare a recent audit of the group psychotherapy service at the Maudsley Hospital with Foulkes's description of the same Unit during his tenure there. During this time huge changes have occurred in the NHS (UK National Health Service) both in service delivery and in the way audit is carried out — the main reason why we believe that comparing the two time frames will be of interest to those working in this field. We will also p…
Attachment in anorexia nervosa
Both clinical and empirical studies suggest that insecure attachment is common in eating disordered populations. Clinical studies have addressed mother‐daughter interactions, but there has been little empirical research into the mother's own attachment patterns and whether there might be intergenerational transmission of these patterns. We aimed to examine the attachment status of patients with severe anorexia nervosa and their mothers, using the…
Attachment research in eating disorders
Aim. In a recent review, disturbances in attachment have been linked with eating disorder symptomatology. However, because of the limitations of study design, few inferences could be drawn about these processes in the aetiology and maintenance of eating disorder. Since that review, there has been further development in the instruments used and the publication of several further studies of attachment processes in eating disorders. We reviewed the …
To change or not to change—‘How’ is the question
The objective was to apply the ‘trans‐theoretical’ model of change to a group of patients with eating disorders. Patients were studied in an in‐patient setting. Two sets of questionnaires were used, one to assess ‘stage’ of change, the other to measure the ‘processes’ used to achieve change. Three stages and eight processes were examined. Thirty‐five patients completed the study. Highest scores were found in the contemplation, and lowest in the p…
The Cretan Bull Sports
The actual nature of the Cretan bull sports can scarcely be in doubt. The wealth of representations of all stages of this extraordinary exhibition are clear enough as far as we are concerned with what actually happened. There remain, however, many unclarified questions about its motivation and purpose, the identity of its performers, its frequency, and above all its location. There has been much speculation on this point, which, reduced to its es…
Quilting in the North of England
Traditional quilting is a functional needlework, forming a textile ‘sandwich’ of two layers of cloth with a wadding placed evenly between them, held together by lines of stitching. The sandwich is thus of a uniform thickness and provides warm and cheap material for clothing or bedding. Corded and stuffed quilting, however, are purely decorative with only parts of the work wadded to raise the design.‘Quilt’ comes from the Latin culcita - a stuffed…
Speculations on Eliot's Time-World
A LTHOUGH T. S. ELIOT has on several occasions warmly praised the poetry and the general point of view of T. E. Hulme, he has not, so far as I know, commented on the fact that Hulme was a disciple of Bergson and that a large portion of Speculations' is devoted to an exposition of Bergson's metaphysic of art, which is dependent upon Bergson's time-philosophy. Mr. Eliot has made known more than once his dislike of the time-philosophy and its progen…
