Digitally delivered contingency management during methadone treatment for people with co-occurring cocaine and opioid use
This project will inform the ancillary content of methadone maintenance treatment for the many patients with substance use disorders that extend beyond opioids, specifically for those who use cocaine. The study's design will provide scientifically valid information about the effectiveness of digitally delivered CM, while app usage data and qualitative data from participants will be a rich resource for interpreting outcome results. CM is the only …

Social Networks and Exchange Sex among Transgender Women
Transgender women are more likely to exchange sex than cisgender individuals. This study investigated how social networks were associated with exchange sex among transgender women in Los Angeles County. From July 2015 to September 2016, transgender women (N = 271; "egos") reported their sexual and substance use behaviors and perceptions of the same behaviors among their peers (N = 2,619; "alters"). Clustered logistic and negative binomial regress…
Depression and HIV transmission risk among methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men
Methamphetamine use among participants in this study inverted the functional form of the relationship between depression and sexual risk among MSM observed in prior studies. Whereas low-grade depression has been associated with increased sexual risk-taking in prior samples of MSM, methamphetamine upends this relationship, such that the greatest engagement in sexual risk-taking occurred among those diagnosed with MDE at baseline. Additional resear…

Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Comorbidity among Methamphetamine-Using Men Who have Sex with Men
Men who have sex with men (MSM) exhibit elevated rates of mental health and substance use disorder relative to their non-MSM male counterparts. Methamphetamine use in particular has been associated with both neuronal damage and mental health disorders among MSM, and this study reports on the prevalence and comorbidity of DSM-5 mental health and substance use disorders in a sample of methamphetamine-using MSM. From March 2014 through January 2015,…

Reflections on Public Sociology
The emergence of Michael Burawoy's public sociology raises a single, overarching question: Why is there a perceived need for an institutionalized public sociology within the discipline? Burawoy's answer is tied to an issue raised by Turner and Turner in their historical examination of the institutionalization of sociology. This chapter examines sociology's problem of public relations by exploring the development of public sociology with respect t…
Associations Between Major Depressive Episode, Methamphetamine Use Disorder Severity, and Engagement in Sexual Risk-Taking Among Methamphetamine-Using Men Who Have Sex with Men
Outcomes from a homegrown HIV prevention program for extremely high-risk, substance-using men who have sex with men with multiple health disparities
From February 2010 through December 2014, 585 substance-using men who have sex with men (MSM) were enrolled into a “homegrown” risk reduction intervention. Participants evidenced significant iterative factor reductions in the odds of substance use including alcohol (AOR = 0.79) and marijuana (AOR = 0.78; both p ≤ 0.05) and marginally significant reductions in the odds of methamphetamine use (AOR = 0.83; p ≤ 0.07). Participants also evidenced sign…

Exposure to Theory-Driven Text Messages is Associated with HIV Risk Reduction Among Methamphetamine-Using Men Who have Sex with Men
Recruiting, Linking, and Retaining High-Risk Transgender Women Into HIV Prevention and Care Services
Despite disproportionately high HIV prevalence rates and high risk for HIV acquisition and transmission, trans women in the United States are less likely than other high-risk populations to be aware of their HIV status or to perceive HIV infection as a serious health threat. Furthermore, concurrently high rates of unstable housing, few legal employment opportunities, lack of social support, and distrust of social service providers limit trans wom…
Associations Between Sexual Abuse and Negative Health Consequences Among High-Risk Men Who Have Sex with Men
This study evaluated whether a history of sexual abuse could differentiate negative health consequences among men who have sex with men (MSM; N=148) enrolled in a risk counseling program. Over half (51.4%) reported an experience of sexual abuse. A history of sexual abuse was associated with increased psychological distress, increased rates of alcohol (AOR = 2.91; p < .01) and/or drug abuse (AOR = 2; p < .01) treatment, increased risk of housing i…

Demographic Regulators in Small-Scale World-Systems
This paper presents a simulation of world-systems theory’s iteration model of early human societies. The polities modeled are composed of sedentary foragers and/or simple horticulturalists that rely upon basic subsistence technologies and display low levels of internal differentiation. World-systems theory’s iteration model integrates several processes of demographic regulation: environmental constraints, migration, intra-polity conflict, and int…
War Games
Collins’ recent theory on battle dynamics is converted into a system of interconnected equations and simulated. Between evenly matched armies, initial advantages are shown to be difficult to overcome due to the numerous reinforcing pathways throughout the model. Morale advantages are shown to lead to quick victories, while material advantages lead to longer wars often won through attrition. A simulation of the Civil War is provided that appears t…

Differences in substance use and sexual partnering between men who have sex with men, men who have sex with men and women and transgender women
Men who have sex with men (MSM), men who have sex with men and women (MSM/W) and transgender women (TGW) remain the populations most severely and disproportionately impacted upon by HIV in Los Angeles County. Baseline data from community-based HIV-prevention programmes serving these populations were analysed to explore differences in demographic characteristics, substance use and sexual partnering between the three groups. Despite high HIV preval…

Predictors of HIV Sexual Risk Behavior Among Men Who Have Sex with Men, Men Who Have Sex with Men and Women, and Transgender Women
Men who have sex with men, men who have sex with men and women, and transgender women are at high risk for HIV infection. This study seeks to clarify which known HIV risk factors (partner type, sex location, serodiscordance, multiple sex partners, substance use during sex) contribute to engagement in high-risk (unprotected receptive anal) sex in each population. Data collected from June 2005 through June 2008 indicate all three populations displa…

Lifetime Substance Use and HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors Predict Treatment Response to Contingency Management Among Homeless, Substance-Dependent MSM
Homeless, substance-dependent men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to suffer health disparities, including high rates of HIV. One-hundred and thirty one homeless, substance-dependent MSM were randomized into a contingency management (CM) intervention to increase substance abstinence and health-promoting behaviors. Participants were recruited from a community-based, health education/risk reduction HIV prevention program and the research activi…

Hierarchy in Mixed Relation Networks
Building on world-systems theory, simulation models of 5-line intersocietal networks were generated in an effort to understand systemic power hierarchies. The societal nodes were exclusively connected by three types of interaction: migration, warfare, and unequal trade. These networks can be considered “mixed relation” networks due to the ways in which these types of ties combine positive and negative sanction flows. Insights from elementary theo…
