Do They Still Hate Horowitz? The “Last Romantic” Revisited
Few pianists have been as acclaimed or as abominated as Vladimir Horowitz. Long ago the subject of a notorious hatchet-job by Michael Steinberg in the New Grove Dictionary of Music, and of an equally trenchant, if undeniably wittier, defense by Richard Taruskin in the New York Times, Horowitz’s playing polarized critical opinion in a manner clearly unattainable by polished mediocrity. But now, nearly thirty years after his death, the time is fina…
Whatever Way Love’s Camel Takes: Remembering Baba Ibrahim Farajajé
This essay is a reflection on the life and work of the late Rev. Dr. Ibrahim Farajajé, a renown scholar of religion and eminent queer theologian. Farajajé’s work and vision as a bisexual theologian of color presents a radical intersectionality of race, gender, and desire. His notion of “kweers-in-intersection” speaks of both the fluidity and complexity that queers of color in particular embody. Farajajé spoke for these demonized desires, demonize…
Colonial Legacies, Decolonized Spirits: Balboa, Ugandan Martyrs and Aids Solidarity Today
The longing and journey toward “decolonization,” of body, mind and community, is a key element in queer/bi spirituality. “Colonization” is that complex notion that refers to external acts of conquest; it also involves the inner colonization or alienation of the minds and souls of the colonized. Two poignant examples from queer history illustrate how the “heteronorm” was/is established over queer bodies and spirits: one, Balboa's murder of “sodomi…

Euesperides (Benghazi): Preliminary report on the spring 2000 season
This paper reports on the second season of the new fieldwork at Euesperides (Benghazi). Excavations continued in Areas P (a large building with early Hellenistic mosaics) and Q (an area of streets and buildings built against the line of the Archaic period city wall), and were commenced at a site in the Lower City (Area R), where evidence for purple dye production from the Murex trunculus shellfish was found. In addition, a programme of machine-cu…
Urbanism and Economy at Euesperides (Benghazi): Preliminary report on the 1999 season
This paper reports on the first season of a new project at Euesperides (Benghazi) aimed at studying the urban development and economy of the city. Two area excavations were started, the first on the site of early Hellenistic pebble and tessellated mosaics discovered in 1998, and the second in what appears to be an area of houses and workshops built against the city wall on the east side of the mound of Sidi Abeid. Geophysical survey and surface p…

Homo Religiosus and Historical Faith
HE distinction between Christian faith and religion, which was urged so strongly by Karl Barth in the second edition of his Epistle to the Romans,' has become almost a commonplace. From the 1930's through to the 1950's, the distinction was made the subject of formal theological investigation, and notably by Hendrik Kraemer.' And now in the 1960's it has found more popular expression through such books as John A. T. Robinson's Honest to God3 and W…
