  • Thinking Small: Islands and the Imperial Logics of Scale

    Open Access•Joseph Keith•ARTICLE•American Quarterly•2025

This essay examines how the meaning of small islands has shifted in our neoliberal present, in ways that reveal changing imperial, in particular US imperial, formations. Opening with a focus on Guam, I suggest that smallness not only invokes a long-standing colonial rhetoric about islands: namely, a relational logic used to render the island's subordination as natural. Rather, smallness has also become an absolute term; it can, and has, become, t…

  • Unbecoming Americans: Writing Race and Nation from the Shadows of Citizenship, 1945-1960

    Joseph Keith•BOOK•Unbecoming Americans•2020

During the Cold War, Ellis Island no longer served as the largest port of entry for immigrants, but as a prison for holding aliens the state wished to deport. The government criminalized those it considered un -assimilable (from left-wing intellectuals and black radicals to racialized migrant laborers) through the denial, annulment, and curtailment of citizenship and its rights. The island, ceasing to represent the iconic ideal of immigrant Ameri…

  • Out of Oakland: Black Panther Party Internationalism during the Cold War; Mainstreaming Black Power

    Joseph Keith•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2018

Black power's image as a politically radical movement of black rage that achieved spectacular, albeit fleeting, national and international renown during the 1960s and 1970s, has seemed, at times, all but historically settled. Over the past two decades, however, a growing body of scholarship has set out—from myriad historical, theoretical, and methodological angles—to unsettle and broaden our understanding of the history and political afterlife of…

  • The Night Malcolm X Spoke at the Oxford Union: A Transatlantic Story of Antiracist Protest

    Joseph Keith•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2017•Cited by: 1

The title of Stephen Tuck's compelling book is refreshingly direct—but also a little misleading. The Night Malcolm X Spoke at the Oxford Union tells the fascinating and previously little-known tale of Malcolm X's speech on December 3, 1964, at the Oxford Union, perhaps the most elite student debating organization in Britain, if not the world. But the night is not in fact the book's central concern. (Indeed, we do not come to the night Malcolm X s…

  • At the Formal Limits: C. L. R. James,Moby Dickand the Politics of the Realist Novel

    Joseph Keith•ARTICLE•Interventions•2009•References: 9

Through a reading of C. L. R. James's Mariners, Renegades and Castaways (a reading of Melville's Moby Dick, which James wrote while imprisoned on Ellis Island in 1952 awaiting deportation hearings), this essay examines James's effort to rethink – through an anti-colonial and Marxist lens – the political limits of the novel form in general and the realist novel in particular as representational regimes. The essay begins by examining how James uses…
