  • Eating America

Joanne Jacobson•ARTICLE•Gastronomica The Journal of Food…•2022

In the years just after World War II, the Passover seder pressed into service every seat in my aunt and uncle’s house, down to the nicked and crayon-stained furniture from my cousins’ bedrooms. Included, of course, were the massive, upholstered oak chairs that completed the dining room set, one of the first major purchases that clinched homeownership for this first American generation. The sticky, vinyl-seated chairs from the kitchen dinette were…

  • What We Talk about When We Talk about Autobiography

    Joanne Jacobson•ARTICLE•a/b Auto/Biography Studies•2018

It seems as though when we—Americanists, anyway—talk about autobiography, we are never just talking about ... autobiography. Since Benjamin Franklin famously offered up not only his life but, equally

  • The Idea of the Midwest

  • Resistance and Subversion in the Letters of Alice James

    Joanne Jacobson•ARTICLE•Biography•1991•Cited by: 1

Letter writing enabled Alice James to resist her consignment to a personally limiting-and publicly authorized-language and narrative. While James accepted the gendered privatization of speech which this marginally "literary" form imposed, she also managed in her letters to exploit the access to language which privatization extended to her, and thus to contest her marginalization

  • The quotidian in twentieth-century fiction by Midwestern women
