  • Xenophon’s Poroi and the Foundations of Political Economy

    John D Lewis•ARTICLE•Polis The Journal for Ancient…•2009•Cited by: 18

In the Poroi, Xenophon’s radical solution to Athens’ financial problems includes several ideas vital to the field of political economy. His identification of justice with the pursuit of wealth provides an alternative to the power politics that for half a century had taken Athens into a series of self-destructive imperial wars. He supports his idea of economic growth with arithmetic calculations, and he connects the results to traditional Greek vi…

  • The Intellectual Context of Solon’s Dike

John D Lewis, John Lewis•ARTICLE•Polis The Journal for Ancient…•2001

Solon is our only primary source for the intellectual context of archaic Athenian political thought. Dike is central to that context. The primary question of dike is the degree of abstraction it denotes. To Solon dike is neither an abstract principle with metaphysical proportions, nor merely the concrete procedures of dispute mediation. Solon understands Dike in a polis that is ordered by the thoughts and actions of particular human beings, not b…

  • Democratic Planning in Agriculture, II

    Open Access•John D Lewis•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1941

The B.A.E.-Extension Service views quoted above stress the importance of securing on planning committees representatives of all economic, social, racial, and geographic groups found in the county. To what extent are such groups represented on planning committees at present? A wide geographic distribution of representation is, of course, more easily secured than any other kind of distribution. Geographic boundaries between groups are easily recogn…

  • Democratic Planning in Agriculture, I

    Open Access•John D Lewis•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1941•References: 1

Planning has always been regarded as a matter for the experts. Laymen affected by the plans have usually participated in the process only by accepting or rejecting through their representatives planning projects drawn up by technicians. The necessary importance of the rôle of technicians and the inevitable conflict between technical considerations, which must determine the recommendations of the experts, and political considerations, which must d…

  • The Elements of Democracy

    Open Access•John D Lewis•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1940•References: 2

“As for democracy, why should we discuss acknowledged madness?” Today numerous clever writers and some serious students are asking the same question that Alcibiades asked some twenty-three centures ago. Yet at the very time when democracy is attacked from all sides, and when Mussolini can speak of trampling on the putrid corpse of liberty, Mussolini himself has the temerity to proclaim that Italian Fascism is the realization of “true democracy.” …

  • Representative Government in Evolution

    Open Access•Charles A Beard, John D Lewis•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1932•Cited by: 10•References: 2

Representative government on a national scale did not originate in the psychology of primitive Teutons, as English historians long contended; nor is it a mere bourgeois institution of passing significance, designed to delude the masses, as Fascists and Bolsheviks have alleged. Its vast historical complications conform to no such simple thesis. On the contrary, representative government began its career as an instrument of political power, in a gi…
