  • The Impact of Social, Legal and Medical Transition on Psychological Distress for Transgender Persons

Open Access•Wade Luquet, Alex Redcay et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2025

Psychological distress is a major health concern for transgender persons going through the transition process. The purpose of this secondary data analysis of the United States Transgender Survey (USTS) compiled by the National Center for Transgender Equality was to explore the relationship between the three stages of transition (social, legal, medical) and levels of psychological distress. While much of the current social work research focuses on…

This study indicates that the state-mandated high-stakes social studies assessments in four states do not require students to demonstrate that they have met the cognitive demands articulated in the state-mandated learning standards. Further, the assessments do not allow students to demonstrate the critical thinking skills required by the standards. In this study, researchers from four states with high-stakes social studies tests questioned how we…

  • A Criminological and Psychiatric Survey of Women Serving a Prison Sentence

ANTHONY MADEN, MARK SWINTON et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1994

The re-building of Holloway prison in the 1970s was based on the assumption that women in prison have high rates of psychiatric disorder. Criticism of Holloway was often directed at the unwarranted medicalization of women's criminality and contemporary evidence provided only limited support for the notion that women in prison had higher levels of psychiatric disorder than men. Interpretation of research findings was difficult because none of the …

ANTHONY MADEN, MARK SWINTON et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1992•Cited by: 1

Data on ethnicity have been a feature of the prison statistics since 1986. The 1988 figures suggest that women of West Indian/African origin make up 20 per cent of the sentenced female prison population and 40 per cent of the drug offenders within it. Data from a survey of 25 per cent of the female prison population show that these figures are distorted by the presence of many women ordinarily resident overseas. When they are excluded the proport…
