Decoding and vocabulary improvements mediate sustained gains in reading comprehension
BACKGROUND: Reading comprehension is critical for academic success, yet many children with persistent decoding difficulties struggle to achieve it. This study examined whether a multicomponent literacy intervention is effective in improving reading comprehension and whether any gains in comprehension are mediated by improvements in word reading and vocabulary knowledge. METHODS: In a randomised controlled trial (RCT), 285 English-speaking childre…

History teachers as curriculum-makers in policy and practice
In England and Scotland, the History National Curriculum avoids the prescription of specific content; expecting schools instead to devise a curriculum appropriate to their pupils within broad guidance. This means in both countries, teachers apparently have responsibility for constructing a curriculum: selecting content, sequencing learning and identifying resources, but only in Scotland is it explicitly stated in policy that teachers act as curric…
Modernism, modernity and contemporality
This paper offers an analysis of Modern Studies, a school subject unique to Scotland.First taught in the 1960s, Modern Studies was originally conceived as an option for students discontinuing their studies in history and geography.Since then, though, Modern Studies has carved a distinctive curricular niche and has become one of the most popular subjects in Scottish schools.Despite this popularity-or, perhaps, because of it-Modern Studies has not …
Muscle specific declines in oxygen saturation during acute ambulation with hands-free and conventional mobility devices
Disuse is associated with reduced muscle oxygen saturation (SmO 2 ). Improving oxygen delivery to tissues is important for healing, preventing muscle atrophy, and reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Mobility devices are used during disuse periods to ambulate and protect the injured limb. This study examined SmO 2 in walking and ambulation with various mobility devices. Thirty-eight participants randomly completed four, ten-minute trials wh…

‘Talk about the questions of the day, shun them not’
This paper brings together the ideas of three writers from the 1880s who argued for an enhanced status for history in the school curriculum. Although there is superficial agreement between the writers in calling for history to develop children’s citizenship and patriotism, each conceives these values differently. Focusing on the teaching of history to children in elementary and third-grade schools, this paper suggests that the considerable plural…
Community and contestation
This paper focuses on a specific example of an all-too-rare phenomenon in education studies: the successful resistance by ordinary classroom teachers of policy change at the macro-level. Focusing on the withdrawal of the 2013 Draft National Curriculum for History in England, it considers the views of six teachers who were personally involved in active resistance.Furthering the view that teacher resistance can represent ‘good sense’, it is suggest…
The Book of Mormon
First published in 1830, the Book of Mormon is the authoritative scripture of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its estimated 13 million members. Over the past twenty-one years, editor Royal Skousen has pored over Joseph Smith's original manuscripts and identified more than 2,000 textual errors in the 1830 edition. Although most of these discrepancies stem from inadvertent errors in copying and typesetting the text, the Yale edi…

Discursive Dancing
This paper is an exploration of the debates surrounding the publication of a new National Curriculum for history in England. The draft curriculum was published in February 2013 and was withdrawn just 6 months later in the face of considerable opposition. This paper offers a tentative explanation for this example of a rare phenomenon: effective resistance to curriculum change. Using a socio-cognitive approach to discourse analysis, the paper explo…
Cooking Pots as Burial Urns
Large ceramic vessels used as burial urns occasionally have been found in Late Mississippian/protohistoric contexts in Alabama and Mississippi. Ethnohistorical documents suggest that large vessels were used for cooking in a domestic context. A systematic examination of three urns from east-central Mississippi shows multiple uses prior to their final deposition with burials. Vessel size analysis of a temporal sequence of sherds from midden context…

Limits of Diplomatic Influence
This article uses events in Brazil at the close of the nineteenth century as a case study to investigate how nations on the 'periphery' contested the efforts of the great powers to control their behaviour. The article concentrates on Brazil's diplomatic relations with Britain and the United States. It examines the failure of the foreign office to negotiate a commercial treaty to match the reciprocity arrangement concluded between Brazil and the U…

Britain and the Brazilian Naval Revolt of 1893-4
Historical writing in English on the diplomatic aspects of the Brazilian naval revolt of 1893-4 tends to be based on United States sources and, consequently, an American interpretation runs through most writing on the subject. This interpretation regards the revolt as an attempt to restore the monarchy by the insurgents with secret support from the European Powers, especially Britain, who were jealous of the increasing American political and econ…
