Peer work and recovery: A relationship approach
The aim of the study was to explore how recovery is facilitated by examining components of the relationship between peer workers and adults impacted by substance use disorder and incarceration. Semistructured, in-person interviews were conducted with two groups: 8 persons active in a substance use program and 4 peer workers. The participants were asked how the relationship impacted recovery and obtaining housing. A reflexive thematic analyses was…

I want my closet back: Queering and unqueering language in Giannina Braschi's Yo-Yo Boing
This essay examines how anxieties about language, gender fluidity, and queer desire intersect in Giannina Braschi’s 1998 bilingual novel Yo-Yo Boing!. Identifying the novel’s ‘translingualism’ (the ways in which its English and Spanish interact, transform, and enhance one another), as a key part of its textual difficulty, it argues that Braschi’s use of language constitutes a queer practice. That language is altered, however, in Tess O’Dwyer’s 20…
The página is still blanca’: Reading the blanks in Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
This article reads Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao via its trope of ‘páginas en blanco’, in order to argue that its creolised language, stylistic devices, and structural organisation mimic the experience of reading narratives about or produced under conditions of censorship and repression. Positioning Oscar Wao as what Roland Barthes calls a ‘writerly’ text, it argues that the novel’s linguistic, typographic, and structural blan…
Evolution of Medical Students' Understanding of Systems-Based Practice: A Qualitative Account
Reflective writing is a useful tool in medical education to analyze student experiences and measure development of certain skills. This tool is particularly useful in identifying skill components of systems-based practice. These skills are necessary for any practicing physician, but are of particular importance as they are a required residency competency. There is now additional focus on systems-based practice with the passage of the Patient Prot…

Modernization and Traditionality in a Multiethnic Society: The Soviet Case
Exposure to modernizing institutions such as the school, factory, and city has been found to be associated with the breakdown in traditional values, beliefs, and behaviors in a wide variety of cultural settings. Socioeconomic change has had a similar impact on the late-modernizing Islamic minorities in the USSR. Although patriarchal attitudes and behaviors have persisted in some areas of family life, extensive shifts in family values and approved…

Committee Decision Making in the Soviet Union
Most Soviet committees, from Politburo to local government executive committee, use procedures designed to encourage broad organizational participation in policy making. These procedures help to minimize capricious policy making and ensure the cooperation of officials responsible for implementing policy. Most importantly, the broad representation of institutional interests in collegial forums reflects the need for institutional checks and balance…

Infant Mortality Trends in the Soviet Union
This article examines the reliability of the Unions statistical reporting system and the extent to which improvements in reporting have affected regional and national infant mortality rates. [The] investigation of the registration system provides persuasive evidence that much of the highly publicized increase in infant mortality rates is due to increasingly comprehensive reporting of infant deaths in the Muslim southern tier (the four Central Asi…

Minorities in the Soviet armed forces
During the 1970s, the proportion of ethnic minorities in the Soviet military manpower pool increased substantially. This trend will continue in the decades ahead, presenting Soviet military authorities with many of the same problems faced by other states with an ethnically mixed military force. These problems are not, however, as serious as some Western specialists have contended. Ethnic problems, manifested primarily in language difficulties and…
Measuring Nationality Trends in the Soviet Union: A Research Note
Preliminary results from the 1979 Soviet census reveal that non-Slavic minorities make up over a quarter of the populace. Ethnic diversity has been and will remain, at least for the foreseeable future, an important consideration in Soviet policy making. Analysis of nationality trends is thus a key aspect of Western study of Soviet domestic politics. Assessment of Soviet labor force prospects, for example, depends in part on the occupational skill…
