This article makes a case for a motive-oriented approach to the performance of meter in posttonal music, first considering post-tonal adaptations of eighteenth-century motive-driven metric manipulations (Mirka 2009; Sullivan 2021a) and then considering more general instances of motivic repetition and imitation.The approach is initially framed in terms of a preference-rule theory of meter (Lerdahl and Jackendoff 1983) and then more fully in terms …
Extending the Parallel Multiple-Analysis Processor
This article revisits the issue of perceived meter in rhythmically irregular post-tonal music by way of Danuta Mirka’s (2009) dynamic model of meter. Her model, which is a parallel multiple-analysis processor in the sense of Jackendoff (1991), accounts for rapidly fluctuating sensations of meter in the real-time listening process, while maintaining local regularity as a defining feature of metric processing. Altruistic behavior is understood to largely stem from adaptations for kin altruism, contingent on degree of relatedness, and/or reciprocal altruism, contingent on degree of benefits conferred in exchange for help. High rates of understatement are found for many government transfer programs and in many datasets. This understatement has major implications for our understanding of economic well-being and the effects of transfer programs.
