Mercury’s Discovery quadrangle (H11) is in the planet’s southern hemisphere (0–90°W, 22.5– 65°S), one of fifteen mapping quadrangles covering Mercury. Here we present a 1:3,000,000 (1:3M) scale geological map of H11, constructed using data collected by NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft mission. On top of a ∼166 m/pixel monochrome basemap, we digitized geological units and their contacts, and additional linear and surface features. We produced two versi…

  • Geology of the Bach quadrangle (H15), Mercury

    Open Access•Annie R Lennox, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

Mercury’s Bach quadrangle (H15) is the areapoleward of 65 °S. We mapped this geologically using remote sensing-basedobservations of surface morphology revealed on MESSENGER data products. Thismap contributes to a series of quadrangle maps providing geological context forthe ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury. We performed digitisation at ∼1:400,000scale and final publication scale is 1:3,000,000. There are four morphologicallydistinct plains…

  • The hierarchy in economics and its implications

    Open Access•Jack Wright•ARTICLE•Economics and Philosophy•2024

This paper argues for two propositions. (I) Large asymmetries of power, status and influence exist between economists. These asymmetries constitute a hierarchy that is steeper than it could be and steeper than hierarchies in other disciplines. (II) This situation has potentially significant epistemic consequences. I collect data on the social organization of economics to show (I). I then argue that the hierarchy in economics heightens conservativ…

  • The high-resolution map of Oxia Planum, Mars; the landing site of the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission

Open Access•Peter Fawdon, Csilla Orgel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

This 1:30,000 scale geological map describes Oxia Planum, Mars, the landing site for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission. The map represents our current understanding of bedrock units and their relationships prior to Rosalind Franklin’s exploration of this location. The map details 15 bedrock units organised into 6 groups and 7 textural and surficial units. The bedrock units were identified using visible and near-infrared remote sensing d…

  • Oxia Planum, Mars, classified using the Noah-H deep-learning terrain classification system

Open Access•Alexander M Barrett, Jack Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

We present a map of Oxia Planum, Mars, the landing site for the ExoMars Rover. This shows surface texture and aeolian bedform distribution, classified using a deep learning (DL) system. A hierarchical classification scheme was developed, categorising the surface textures observed at the site. This was then used to train a DL network, the ‘Novelty or Anomaly Hunter – HiRISE’ (NOAH-H). The DL applied the classification scheme across a wider area th…

  • Geology of the Neruda quadrangle (H13), Mercury

Open Access•Benjamin Man, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

We present the first geological map of the Neruda Quadrangle (H13), Mercury. H13 is in Mercury’s southern hemisphere between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S, and longitudes 90°E–180° covering a total area of just under 5 million km2, equivalent to 6.5% of the planet’s surface. Map digitisation was carried out at scales between 1:300,000 and 1:700,000 for final presentation at 1:3,000,0000, from end-of-mission data products from NASA’s MESSENGER mission. We…

  • Mawrth Vallis, Mars, classified using the Noah-H deep-learning terrain classification system

Open Access•Alexander M Barrett, Peter Fawdon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

A deep learning (DL) terrain classification system, the Novelty and Anomaly Hunter – HiRISE (NOAH-H) was used to produce a terrain map of Mawrth Vallis, Mars. With it, we digitised the extent and distribution of transverse aeolian ridges (TARs), a common type of martian aeolian bedform. We present maps of the site, classifying terrain into descriptive classes and interpretive groups. TAR density maps are calculated, and the network output is comp…

  • Jezero crater, Mars

Open Access•Jack Wright, Alexander M Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022

We applied a deep learning terrain classification system, the ‘Novelty or Anomaly Hunter – HiRISE’ (NOAH-H), originally developed for the ExoMars landing sites in Oxia Planum and Mawrth Vallis, to the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landing site in Jezero crater. NOAH-H successfully classified the terrain in four HiRISE images of Jezero even though the landforms in the Jezero study area were slightly different from those in the training dataset. We …

  • The Relationship between Physical Activity and Long Covid

Open Access•Jack Wright, Sarah Astill et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The relationship between Long Covid (LC) symptoms and physical activity (PA) levels are unclear. In this cross-sectional study, we examined this association, and the advice that individuals with LC received on PA. Adults with LC were recruited via social media. The New Zealand physical activity questionnaire short form (NZPAQ-SF) was adapted to capture current and pre-COVID-19 PA levels and activities of daily living (ADLs). Participants reported…

Methods: Data were derived from a point-in-time survey of psychiatrists and their patients with schizophrenia conducted across the US, France, Spain, China, and Japan between July and October 2019. For the purposes of this analysis, only data from US practitioners and patients were included…

  • My objectivity is better than yours

    Open Access•Rosie Worsdale, Jack Wright•ARTICLE•Synthese•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 21

Absract In this paper, we contribute to a growing literature in the philosophy of social science cautioning social scientists against context-independent claims to objectivity, by analyzing the recent proposal of a new Basic Index of Gender Inequality (BIGI) by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary. Despite the many internal problems with BIGI, Stoet and Geary have had some success in positioning the index as an important corrective to the way in which …

We have used data from the MESSENGER spacecraft to make the first geological map of H05. Linework was digitized at 1:400,000-scale for final presentation at 1:3,000,000-scale, mainly using a ∼166 m/pixel monochrome basemap. Three major photogeologic units of regional extent were mapped: intercr…

  • Rescuing Objectivity

    Open Access•Jack Wright•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 20

Ascriptions of objectivity carry significant weight. But they can also cause confusion because wildly different ideas of what it means to be objective are common. Faced with this, some philosophers have argued that objectivity should be eliminated. I will argue, against one such position, that objectivity can be useful even though it is plural. I will then propose a contextualist approach for dealing with objectivity as a way of rescuing what is …

  • The geography of Buddhism in the Four Corners states

    J S Williams, J B Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Geography•2015•References: 10

While only 1–2% of US residents self-identify as Buddhist, this faith is expanding and diffusing rapidly despite its dissonance with American individualism and traditional Judeo-Christian ideals. Using data from recent surveys of religion, Internet searches, and a phone survey, this paper explores the diffusion of Buddhism into four distinct cultural settings: Colorado (secular, progressive), Utah (Mormon, conservative), New Mexico (Catholic, pol…
